1,188km remaining after every fill up - 2018 1.5l ford focus diesel

I have a 2018 1.5l diesel ford focus since new. It'll be getting changed in a few weeks but wanted to ask here about something before the car is gone. For the past few years, whenever I fill the tank with fuel, it states that there is a range of 1,188km left. Same figure every time and that figure might not change until I've done 100km plus on that tank of fuel. It just seems very odd. I've never actually got 1,188km out of a 50 litre tank. I usually get about 1,100km or a little less although always over 1,000km.

Is 1,188km some theoretical maximum programmed into the computer?

I have a Mazda CX5. I've noticed when I fill up that the Max Range has decreased in the last few years. Don't know if the quoted range is anything like the actual range. I do believe, however, that the Max Range is calculated from the transmitter that shows the fuel flow. My car can shows the instantaneous flue flow or the average fuel flow (over a few km). My average is typically 5.1 litres/100 km. Have a look at this. This will give you the best indication of how much fuel you are using.

The long range fuel economy was at 4.7l/100km for the first few years bit it's at 4.6l/100km for the past couple of years. This would give about 1,087km if I used the 50 litres.

However, this is not what I'm trying to get info on. What I'm asking is, is 1,188km some theoretical maximum programmed into the computer?

  • If EVs ever reach this range between recharging cycles I’ll consider buying one…. 😄

Mine (2015 1.6 Diesel) does the same on every fill-up - I'll see 1,098km. Neither the needle or estimate will move much until I've done about 100km+ though. Actual range ends up being about 980-1,040km on full tank - 47.5L on fill up.

Must be some oddity with the ECU overestimating the range. Happens regardless of resetting all trip values, resetting ECU (battery disconnect) etc.

edit - I'd suggest asking this over at the fordownersclub (uk, ie) site. They might be able to give more specific insight into this than a general motors forum could.

Thanks for taking the time out for such a detailed and helpful response. I may indeed get in touch with the ford owners club as I'm curious to know if the 1,188 figure really is of any significance.

Out of interest, do you reset your average/long term fuel economy reading frequently as it varies quite a lot in your photos? I've never reset mine.

I reset the entire trip computer on every fill-up. The estimate averages out to 4.5-4.6 l/100km after 150-200km. Actual fuel economy is 4.75l/100km.

We must drive on similar routes, in terms of speeds, not too many instances of accelerating from a standstill and usually not driving in rush hour traffic conditions..... Plus a not too heavy right foot.
