AFT (another free text) app. They were the days!

I think that’s why I registered to post. Had lurked around for a while before. 16 years later I’m still here.

The knowledge on Tech such as aft and cabbage texter was excellent. Also plenty of information gained from posters on satellite/terrestrial forums.

Bargain alerts is what I mainly frequent these days. Much quieter these days but still the odd bargain every now and again.

    I like quake.

over time, however it became a catch all repository for folk that need a good cajoling then the snowflake era; cajoling became trolling and so this is the soup we’re in

I think it was more about the people who owned the site at that point than any kind of 'snowflake' (puke) politics from the userbase.

If I remember correctly,  Distilled Media bought up Boards.ie shares around 2011/12 and then not too long after that in 2013 you saw things like The Thunderdome shut down and removed from the website as corporate saw it as unpalatable and not lining up with their image.

I first joined in 2005 to take part in discussions on that forum, then discovered the other forums of interest to me gradually.

I agree very much with Arghus - 2008/9/10 kinda time was its best. Great bunch - social events stemmed from it, some absolutely brilliant contributors. Still a good site though.

What was the Thunderdome? I never really ventured out of Motors for a long time.

It was a forum where folks were allowed to go to abuse each other as much as they wanted. With the one caveat that it stayed in that forum.

A lot of it was fairly good natured abuse, non personal just pointed at people's online persona. I do remember seeing some stuff posted there though that went too far (one in particular a poster told another poster who was known to be pregnant that he hoped she fell down the stairs and miscarried or something along those lines)

Was a part of the website for years. Problem was if I remember correctly is that posts from it still came up in Google search so the new powers that be decided to axe it.

Cheers, It’s probably tame compared to what you hear about some parts of rhe internet these days.

Was there Ranting and Raving forum too at some point? When it was ‘handbags as dawn’ in Motors the mods would tell them to take it over to Ranting and Raving. Was never sure if they were serious or joking.

It's a real forum alright, you just need to request access:
