What caliber should I get next?

I'm looking to get another barrel for my AI AX (currently .308 Win with 12 inch twist). I have a 6.5 Creedmoor rifle already ... which I love. Thinking about 6mm Creedmoor barrel for my AX.

    Options are:

    - 6mm Creedmoor

    - another 6.5 Creedmoor

Must be short action and .308 bolt compatible. I don't/can't reload, so factory ammo is my only option.

Is 6mm Creedmoor factory ammo available on the shelf anywhere in Ireland?

Well going by the Dept of Justice questioner released today, looks like you need to do apprenticeship with someone who owns whatever calibre you want to go for

If you can do the job, do it. If you can't do the job, just teach it. If you really suck at it, just become a union executive or politician.

A quick google threw up this list of options:

Short actions with a bolt face .Dia of .473 +/-

    225 Winchester

    22/250 Remington

    6mm Norma BR

    243 Winchester

    250 Savage

    260 Remington

    6.5/284 Norma

    7/08 Remington

    284 Winchester

    300 Savage

    308 Winchester

    338 Federal

    35 Remington

    358 Winchester

    6 & 6.5 Creedmoor

    6.5 Lapua

    6XC

It's down to whatever fancies your tickle and can be got of the shelf.

First they came for the socialists...

Don't forget about the 6.5x55, greatest calibre ever made, fact.

    Agree, but long action required.

Sorry missed the short action requirement.

The Yanks are seem to like the 6mm Creedmore. Plenty of hype as usual but looking at the reviews it seems to perform well. Maybe compare both performances (6 and 6.5) over the distances you are shooting or realistically intend to shoot regularly.

If it were me in your position I'd get one in 6mm. If for no other reason than you already have a 6.5. If you got another 6.5 and it shot less good than your existing 6.5, what a dilemma.

I've no experience of the Creedmore rounds but I did have a 6.5x55 and a 6mm BR barrels for my Blaser. Not much to choose between them to 600. I've rarely shot further than that so again my point about what you actually intend to use it for on a regular basis.

The issue is I've not seen 6mm Creedmore on sale and the choice of match ammo might be limited if it is. Check the recommended grain and availability here before you decide I had that issue with the 6mm BR. Had to order it specially in bulk packs of 600.

If it’s good old bolt actions you are on then the yanks are all over 7mm PRC now. The 2023 version of the 7mm magnum.

Give it 15 years before we ever see it here once it’s not a fad.
