It's my husband's 40th birthday in December so I am looking to book a trip away for new years to celebrate. I know he would love to ski but I'm thinking a week would be too much for me so wondering if we could do 3 or 4 days skiing and then maybe a 2 or 3 days city break also. Anybody ever do this or could recommend anywhere. Thinking Italy would be nice. Or is there any specialist travel agent that might be able to help?? Thanks

I'm personally a big fan of Austrian skiing, could fly into Munich (likely have to fly from Dublin) and get the train into Austria, multiple resorts, get a city break in in Munich or get the train direct to Innsbruck and do the city break and skiing all around there. There's also Garmisch in Germany which is also close to Munich.

In Italy, I haven't been in years but hear positive things about Souze d'Oulx and it's connected to Turin by train (think you can fly out of Shannon).

Geneva as a city/airport is also a hub for a lot of the french resorts (Chamonix, Courmeyeurs etc)

Topflight or Crystal Ski would be some of the main players in terms of travel agents specialising in skiing but are mainly focused on Austria/Italy I believe.

If you are prepared to all of the organization yourself, you can have as many days at a ski resort and other locations as you wish. The first thing to find out is that resorts that are likely to have the best snow during the period you want to travel.

Since you want to combine a city break with a short ski trip, you might be interested in some of the package deals offered by the railway companies. These packages usually include a return train ticket to one of the main cities such as Geneva, accommodation at a ski resort (usually France or Switzerland from Geneva) and a ski pass for a couple of days.

I think these kind of holidays are a great idea as a week is too long for skiing to be honest

Consider Bergamo, Verona, Bolzano or Venice combined with any of the Dolomites resorts - mostly a little over two hours drive, the Aosta valley resorts are also just a little over two hours from Milan or Bergamo

Munich and a whole load of resorts (Zillertal valley a little over two hours drive)

    Lyon and Tignes / Val D'Isere / 3 valleys

Zurich and a few different (slightly more expensive) Swiss resort directly and super easily accessible by train

Barcelona / Toulouse and the Pyreenees

    Etc etc

Should also add Salzburg which has a whole bunch of resorts about an hour away

Should also say that I suggest all of those cities above because they have direct flights from Dublin
