DiCaprio's death in the Departed was pretty shocking. Also Martin Sheen's death in the same movie, while not as shocking, was still very sudden. I was like no please not Martin Sheen!

Maybe doesn't have to be a good guy exactly, but perhaps a likeable character you're rooting for.

I agree on both of them!

Di Caprio related - Dr Shultz in Django Unchained.

The raft was big enough for Rose and Jack.

I would say the son's death in The King's Man. Sort of comes out of left field.

Neil Perry in the Dead Poet's Society

Ricky (Boyz n the Hood). Maybe a bit expected, as there was some foreshadowing, but he's definitely a good guy.

For subverting a cliche and spending a load of time setting up a joke, the X-Force parachute jump in Deadpool 2 is hard to beat 🤣

Transformers: The Movie: the deaths of so many transformers in the first thirty minutes, not to mention Optimus Prime. As a kid in the 1980s that was shocking.

Robotech: The Macross Saga: Roy Fokkers death, and towards the end of the series, almost the entirety of the bridge crew of the SDF-1 being killed off in one go.

    Serenity: Wash & Shepard Book

Pulp Fiction: the black kid, Marvin, shot in the back of the car. Inconsequential character but it is so abrupt and without warning.

If it counts, Sam, Will Smith's german shepard in "I Am Legend".

The character of Finnick Odair in the final Hunger Games movie. (Mockingjay Pt.2). Played by Sam Claflin. Eaten by lizard mutants.

Both movies coincidentally directed by Francis Lawrence.

Not sure if Newt and Hicks in Alien 3 count as they didn't even get a chance to appear.

    Kyle Reese in The Terminator.

Writing off those two characters - who were so integral to the success of the second film - really hurt the franchise imo. Felt like such a lazy, writer hack way to remove characters.

Paul Newman in Hombre is, IMHO one of the great westerns.

LDC can never die soon enough in any movie for me - as someone said above, saves us from having to watch too much of him.

Frank Sinatra in Von Ryan's Express,

Steve McQueen in The Sand Pebbles ("I was home. What happened? What the hell happened?")

or, more abruptly, Mark Ruffalo in Collateral

    Aim for the bushes !!!

    Edit - Samuel L Jackson, not Ice T !!

Drew Barrymore in Scream has to be up there with unexpected deaths, certainly the timing of it anyway.

On the contrary, I think it added to Ripley's tragic arc. Just as Ripley had gained another chance at being a mum, it was ripped from her due to the nemesis she faces in the trilogy. In a way it strengthened her character.

In any case, there was nowhere to go with regards to Newt and Hicks. We already saw that story in 'Aliens'.

Amazed noone has mentioned Janet Leigh in Psycho - I'd imagine that was quite the shocker back in 1960!
