Old Bottle of Gordons Gin

I recently came found this bottle of Gordons Gin. Is there anywhere I can take it or does anyone know what it is?

You may be concerned about drinking it because it is old stock.

Don't worry it will be fine for consumption.

If you don't drink gin you could give it to someone who does.

If you don't know anyone who would like it a drop of gin in an apple crumble is nice.

From what I can tell its about 50-60 years old. I have no need for it and dont drink Gin. I just was curious to know if there was anything special about it before I get rid of it.. It seems to have been bought in the states due to the unusual volume on it.

Might have been bought on the ferry they have always had duty free in lager sized bottles.

That looks like a similar bottle to me, but is in better condition and has a box with it too. I can't imagine you'd get much more than the value of the liquid, particularly if you're selling it in Ireland.

OP's bottle is a little larger and uses the older pre UK EU volume. iirc Bottles back then used to be pints or 20 fluid ounce. This a two pint bottle 40floz 1.13 liters. Also back then Gordons was 40% spirit rather than the 37 1/2% it is now (to keep it below a band for extra duty). The OP's is export strength at 47%.

I think that the duty free label detracts from the value? Unless being 47% and duty free adds to it?

Just realised it can't be that old although being duty free may confuse this but pre EU all UK spirits used the proof scale for alcohol content and Gordons was usually marked 70% proof spirit.

Why not just hang onto it in case you ever have a visitor who drinks gin? I don't drink spirits but always have gin, vodka, rum and whiskey in the house for visitors/guests.

Not what I read but maybe I'm looking in the wrong place best I can make out is 83° and 47° on the bottom of the back of the label which would hold up as 83° proof is 47.4% ABV. And looking that up found me this gem

They say that they haven't changed the recipe in 230+ years? So would be interesting to compare with a current bottle off the shelves but then possibly not as 37.5% ABV never holds up well against 47% ABV.

Missed the American on the bottom line. 94.6° proof American would be 47.4% AbV or 82.8° proof UK.

I think thats why Europe when over to AbV, gets very confusing when you have Proof, American Proof and AbV on one bottle.

Most pubs displays of old bottles of whiskey are filled with caramel water and resealed; a few random bottles like that are more likely to be real than a wall of them though.

I've noticed in one pub where you can sit right up to it that they're all entirely fake there - reprinted labels on random bottles. Same label type turning on on multiple different sizes and shapes; no back labels on anything.

Luckily enough they are all real. Although we have a few empty bottles that we're found in the cellar from back when the building was a merchant back in the day.

Also got gifted two of these old unopened Guinness 6 packs that expired in February 1985 that were found in the staff room of my old school.

We bought the MIL a bottle of Hennessy a few years back, she threw most of it out in the end because she thought it might have 'gone off' 😮 I have since appraised her of the fact that spirits never go off! although they often evaporate a bit as the OP's bottle has, which doesn't do any harm (apart from reducing the alcohol content a little bit!)

Yeah I always thought ABV = proof/2 but that's only in the US. According to Wikipedia 100° British proof was equivalent to 57.15% ABV.
