Son on emergency tax a long time

Hello all, My son is 19 and he has had about 5 different jobs in the past year or so, but the job he is in now he is 13 weeks there. And is still on emergency tax. He has gone onto revenue and inputted his employers number, and seen that his last job which was Xmas work in Dunnes stores was still active, he has now changed this,

We are not sure if it's the tax office that still has him on the emergency tax or is it something his employers are doing, but other staff who have joined since he began are now off the emergency. I also tried to use one of those tax online sites to try reclaim his emergency tax back for the Xmas job and the job he is in now, but they said he can't claim anything now.can he request a statement liability.

Im not great with tax matters and this has use both confused. If anyone could guide us in the right direction the would be great.

What does his latest tax credit certificate say? It should say he's on a cumulative basis in order for him to be taxed normally.

If he's on a cumulative basis, then his employer will operate his tax normally and refund any overpayment of tax for the present tax year through his wages.

For back years, no one should be using a tax back service to fil a tax return. There straightforward details on how to do it yourself and some videos to watch if you don't want to take the few minutes to read the instructions.

I’m thinking that one of those 5 jobs he has had in the last while has not cancelled him.

He needs to go into his MyAccount and check all the previous jobs and make sure they say “ceased”.

and go to My Enquiries and ask them why he’s not on a cumulative basis.

We did notice that his last part time job in Dunnes was still active and it's now classed as creased but I was looking at the two jobs before that were showing creased but when I looked tonight they were only ceased on the 30th of March. ..?. I have his pay slips there and they do t saying anything about cumulative tax . I have his most recent tax credit certificate is there something on that that might indicate if it's his employer that's over taxing him ?? Thanks in advance

Working out the tax minus any credits will tell you straight away if the employer is over taxing him, but at the same time it may not be their fault. They can only do what they're told in terms of tax.

Make sure his tax credits are all transferred to the new job too.

40% income tax rate applied all year, no tax credits. He needs to transfer all available tax credits and cut off point to this employment. This can be done in his Revenue MyAccount, by calling Revenue PAYE helpline or sending a MyEnquiry to Revenue via his MyAccount.
