What would happen if some future US president, of Irish descent, discover his Irish ancestors were criminals and his Irish third cousin is a member of a notorious criminal gang?

Be great fun altogether.

Irish ancestors is a moot point in a way as we have 4 grandparents and 16 great-grandparents.

What happens if your acesestors just posted garbage on the internets.... probably going to be a lot of those discoveries by the way things are going now..

We have a fair few distant relatives in the US as do a very large number of Irish people, so stands to reason the Irish background of an amount of Irish American might be very mixed.

(It's extremely common for Aussie politicians to have Irish (or British) ancestors who were criminals, and not that uncommon to have living family members who have unsavoury stories. It's not an issue. Why would it be?)

At any given time there were about 15k members of the Royal Irish Constabulary, add to that the British regiment raised in Ireland such as the Connaught Rangers, the Royal Dublin fusiliers, the civil service etc and there is a very good you have some relatives that you'd be happy to disown. There were not many choices for a young Irish man in those days - the farm (if the oldest), the priesthood, the civil service, RIC & DMP if they had the IQ or the army, if not. So the changes are pretty good all Irish American politicians have a few black sheep in the family.

I know we had family who were in the British navy in or around the 1890s and who were lost at Sea as they put it then.

This is meant to be slightly humours it's AF, by chance a US president could be related to a current member of well know Irish criminal gang just as much as related to an upstanding member of the community.
