2015 Focus 1.5 Diesel

Hi, just looking for opinions here. I have a 2015 Focus 1.5 Diesel with 207k kms. I’ve had it the last 2 years and put 50k on the clock in that time. The last while there’s a loud rattle coming from the engine bay when the clutch is pressed in. I’m thinking the flywheel is on the way out. Noise is only when clutch is pressed all the way to the floor. A few people have said if it was the flywheel the noise would be when foot is off clutch? Any ideas? Is it worth fixing considering the milage or cut losses and sell? Car is is decent nick apart from this. Thanks.

Just a wear and tear part, few hundred quid and it will be good to go again.

Probably 800-1000 for clutch and flywheel on that car, maybe less. Could be an issue with pressure plate. Either way it's best practice to replace the lot while you're in there.

I don't think the subframe needs to be touched to remove the bell housing.

I have a 2010 mondeo with 220k on the clock with slight flywheel judder, I've started saving for it now for when it goes.

If the rest of the car is in good nick, I would absolutely pay for the repair, better the devil you know. You'd spend more on your next car if you were to trade it in.

Also 207km is nothing for a diesel.

No need to drop the subframe. Think a full kit is around 400-500 euro the last time i checked, after that it's where you take it for the labour they charge. If the car is still fresh it's the way to go.

Cheers lads, best to do now or wait till it goes? If it goes will it take anything else out with it?

Doesn't really matter whether you fix it or sell it. You'll really be paying for it anyway.

The price of second hand cars currently would make it more economical to start saving for it for when it does go fully and replace it.

207km is not massive mileage for a diesel car and certainly not worth getting rid of just because it needs a new flywheel which is a serviceable part with a limited life span. A new clutch/flywheel will be significantly cheaper than changing cars. You also know your existing car and it's history versus buying another car that you know very little about it's history.

I wouldn't wait until it fails either as the flywheel could end up damaging other components resulting in a higher repair bill, have them replaced and drive on would be my advice.

Cheers all, will get flywheel looked at, was thinking about changing anyway due to mileage, but doesn’t really make sense as I do like the focus, nice car to drive. Was just worried if I sink the guts of a grand into it it’ll start causing more trouble as ive already spent a few bob on driveshaft and suspension. Are they generally reliable the diesel focuses? Many more years left in her if serviced right?

The missus has a 12 plate 1.6 focus, exact same engine as your car Ford just reduced its footprint by a marginal amount as the years went on and I think the 1.5 is an 8 valve single cam as opposed to 16 valve dual cam on the 1.6

It's touching 300,000km and driving fairly well.

If you've already spent money on it that's more of a reason to keep it.

There's such a culture in this country to bin your car when it starts giving issues, take out a sizeable loan 3 or 4x the cost of whatever needs repairing and buy another car instead of sticking with what you have and repairing it.

Not having a go at you OP just a generic rant.

100% definitely fork out for the repair is my opinion. You'll be glad you did when you feel how it's driving with a new DMF/Clutch.

Also a surefire way to know if the Flywheel is on the way out, especially on Fords, when you turn the engine off you'll hear a rumble from passenger side footwell area for a second or so after the engine is switched off, its quite noticeable.
