5.1 system and projector

Hi. Looking for suggestions for 5.1 system and projector and screen. A lot of the time the 5.1 would be used as a stereo for playing spotify and radio.

The room is open plan. The projector played in a 4 x 4m room, 3m ceilings. The bigger space where the speakers will be in the corners is about 8m x 4m.

Needs to have a decent app, will be wired to network.

Projector will be ceiling mounted at about 3m, with a max screen size about 2.4m wide.

Current amp still in use elsewhere is Onkyo NR609, very happy with that type of spec. Speaker wise probably wall mounted near ceiling, discrete ideally.

Budget wise I'd be hoping not much more than 1.2k.

For the the 5.1 setup you could go for the Yamaha all in one box 5.1 priced at 499€ (There is no App for this Amp).

For the Projector Screen there is a 92" by Optoma priced at 229€. This is 21.4 meters in width.

None of these items are networkable so there are no apps for them.

The above come in a little over the 1200€ mark at 1406€.

To get an AV receiver that can be networked you would be in around 489€ for the Denon aVR660

This can be controlled by a Denon App and also has built in Heos that uses an app.

What is it you want to do by networking the items?

To get a smart projector most are short throw, like the Anker Nebula Apollo coming in at 479€

Short throw projector need to be placed much closer to the screen.

Hi - thanks Kenny for the detailed response.

• AMP - I think the Denon would win out over the Yamaha. What speakers would you recommend with that? I already have a centre speaker from you, a Monitor. So looking for the 4 speakers to run music as well as being the front & back speakers for the 5.1. I'd need some sort or brackets wall fix the speakers.
• Projector - the Optoma you linked looks great, good spec.

I may need to prioritise projector over amp (i.e. buy amp & speakers later). I have a Panasonic SC-HTB688 soundbar/sub that has Optical Digital Audio Input, HDMI (ARC), and bluetooth. Is there a way to connect that projector to this soundbar in the short term?

On the Networking question...it was more to do with having an App and voice control rather than anything like a NAS.

If you wanted a bit more oomph then perhaps the Monitor Audio Bronze 1 which we have reduced to 99€

The MASM bracket will also fit these.

The Denon 660 has voice control for Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa so it has you covered there.

For connecting the Projector to your current soundbar you would just use HDMI. The projector will have an HDMI input, so you just run from the soundbar HDMI output to the Projector HDMI input.

Your sources would then also need connected to you soundbar.

Re speakers - If I was to go for small as possible with decent sound what would I be looking at? I'm not sure I have space for the ones you quoted.

Re the temp solution for audio for the projector, I was hoping I might be able to take the audio from the projector into the soundbar via digital audio. Initially the source for projector would be hdmi direct to the projector. Longer term I would look for a more traditional solution - amp fed with multiple sources, hdmi to projector for picture, sound to speakers.

The only Audio output on the projector is a 3.5mm jack.

If you only have Optical then you would need to convert the the 3.5mm to 2 RAC using the following cable:

You would then need an analogue to digital converter:

This will then allow you to connect to your soundbar via Optical.

The Mass speakers listed above are as small as I would go before you start to compromise the sound quality.

The Mass Speakers are pretty small at only 14.7cm in height x 12cm width and 10 cm in depth.

Going smaller than this there is the Cambridge Min 12 priced at 79€ each. You will 100% require a subwoofer with these.

I appreciate the solution for the soundbar, but I think I need to find another use for it and get on with setting this up right. So it's looking like the Denon and the Optoma.

Re speakers: I will need a centre (change of plan with existing kit) and I'd like a sub ideally.

I also spotted the Fyne 300.

Yeah the soundbar work around is a bit messy unfortunately.

The DX2 5.1 would pair nicely with the Denon 660. It comes with it own wall fixing which are just little eye hole mounts that hang on a screw or nail in the wall.

The F300 speakers would be much better as they are heavily reduced and normally retail around 249€ so they are a great bargain.

Finding a wall mount for these is more tricky and the only option I could offer would be the BT77 brackets priced at 67€ per pair

A couple of questions: the Fyne speakers link is to a bundle with Denon DM41 Dab, right? I read online that the Fyne speakers come with a bracket on the back, is that not the case? I might hold off buying bracket until I have the speakers.

I'll need a long-ish HDMI cable to connect AMP to Projector - what would you recommend as max length for 4K remaining stable? I think I'll need 10 metres or so to get it from source to projector.

Can you also send me cost per metre of speaker wire?
