NI imports with UK reg

I've been told if a UK reg car has been registered in NI for more than 12 months it's exempt from duty and VAT. Only vrt is applied on importing to Republic, is that true?

I thought car had to be registered in NI pre brexit.

It's doesn't need to have been registered in NI, it needs to have been in Northern Ireland. Hence proof of it arriving in Northern Ireland pre 1st or January 2021 is acceptable for VRT.

Was the car in the north before 1st or January 2021? If not it's liable for vat and customs.

Is there an easy way to tell if a car was in NI before 2021? Or is it a case of forking out on Cartell or similar everytime!

Do a free MOT check on the gov.uk website. Tests done in mainland UK will show, but tests done in NI won’t show.

If you’re seeing tests around or after 2021 then be on your guard.

I just found that site, its showing five tests from 2017 until the current one as "Test location - Not available for tests carried out in Northern Ireland"

Will the VRT office take this as proof it was in the country, I hope so..
