    The short answer is - yes, this would be a good choice of present.

    It's widely regarded as one of the definitive Batman stories, it has fantastic artwork, and it is self-contained so there's no worry about needing to read anything else beforehand.

    Unfortunately, figuring out whether collected volumes of comics are standalone or part of a longer story is more complicated than it should be, unless you have someone to hand who is already familiar with the series or publisher.
