I ordered a picatinny rail for my CZ 457 from the US. I got the customs invoice today to pay €14.03 on a value of €45. 79. Item was $48.95 with $23.53 post, total was $72,48. I thought customs would be a lot more. So they only charged duty on the item not the postage 😊

do we have to pay customs on everything we buy in from USA? Or is it under a certain value is tax free?

    Everything.

Was over €22 but that's done away with.

You were lucky. They usually charge on the total price including the postage.

I got something with a value of 100 dollars recently and it came straight to me without any charges.

    Area 419 Bolt Knob - $25

    Postage - $39.72

    Customs - €5.37

    Brokerage Charges - €15.90

    VAT - €3.66

    Total - €83.99

Why the need to stick everything into a box, a jiffy envelope would have been grand and then the brokerage charge from UPS. I've paid for you to ship that item from the States to me in Ireland, surely dealing with and collecting a customs charge should be part of that. Still though, feeling like a bit of a t!t for spending over €80 on a bolt knob, priceless.

First they came for the socialists...

Two replacement caps from vortex optics and a baseball cap. US value 4usd

Customs declared value in Ireland ZERO value An Post Admin charge for stopping the package and writing me that this has zero value 4.50!!!

Replacement clip for a pocket EDC torch value 25 US cents. Declared Irish customs value ZERO value. An Post admin charge for the above bollix action another 4.50 Euros

Conclusion An Post money-hungry profiteering highwaymen engaged in piracy ! Nice number to make money from thin air!

An post do charge but I find the courier companies charge more.

When ordering from the states if the option to use USPS is available i use that. That is the US Postal service and it will be delivered by an post.

I also found the bigger the package the more likely you are to pay customs charges.

I got stuff in padded envelopes and never paid anything but if it comes in a box I usually have to pay.

I got something recently (a RD mount) and the person sending it put 1 dollar value...not stopped at all.

    I was amazed.....

    No charge at all.

Deliverme.ie will ship free from NI to south for 25 euro. Not tried three yet as only heard of them after it cost me 100 euro in charges

Vat on the item only would have been €11.25. You purchased on USD, I assume $72 worth about 60-65 in euro, which means the 14 euro is about right for vat on item plus postage.

No customs is charged below $150 in value.

€22 was a VAT relief that been done away with.

Anybody know what customs are like at Dublin Port if you are a foot passenger coming from Holyhead and say you bought a piece of sporting equipment, like a fishing rod or golf club. Are you likely to be stopped and asked to pay duty etc.

No idea if this would work but maybe get rid of the packaging and say you brought it with you when you went abroad. Put a sticker or dirt or something on it to make it look used.

Had an order last week, of a damaged sight and take-down tool, that I could salvage some small parts from, sent from UK, with electronic customs info supplied and acknowledged by An Post, but refused when it arrived in Dublin. Sender is reliable international distributor who knows his sh1t, but seems to be russian roulette with An Post. Only reason I know this is that I initiated complaint and answer was "if you didn't hear from us, it was returned to sender because he was wrong"

It's not an arbitrary decision by An Post, who just collect the charge, it's a decision by Customs that they must follow. The scanned documents obviously have some error or omission.

Not helped by the bots in an Post .If there isn't an exact customs declaration number for the item..."Does not compute ,error, error"I ordered a piece for a vintage chainsaw, carburettor mount,2nd hand value 20 usd.Declared as such by the seller and EBay on the shipping documents.Ofcourse the an post customs morons dont have a customs number for somthing that specific.Only thing they have are "chainsaw files" which any idiot can see are not what is declared.Engine part isnt there either,or anything relatable. So of course its kicked back twice! As we tried two different declarations of this item.Held up a project for 3months because of this idiotic EU SSR diktat.

In the end I got a mate who works for an international company to courier it by hand over by one of the regular inter office guys on the hop between NYC and Dublin.Only way guys is to get creative on shipping on anything anymore.
