Mast locations.

Hi ,

Is there somewhere that you can check when or if planning permission has been granted for the erection of a communications mast, who owns same, or alternatively, a place where you can check on the locations of all masts used for broadband, mobile phones, etc.

A friend has advised that a mast has appeared in an adjoining field with no planning notices being displayed.

Certain masts (depending on height and location) may be exempt and may not appear on the Local Authority planning sites .( and note FAQs at bottom of link)

The problem with Comreg's SiteViewer it can take 6 months or more for any new masts to appear there as I observed locally where 3 new masts were installed in the first half of 2022 but didn't appear until late 2022.

Under Section 254 applications, licences require no formal planning permission for construction. They cost €125 to lodge with a local authority, and are typically used by pubs and restaurants, for example, to place tables and chairs on the streets.

More recently, they have been used for the installation of mobile signal-boosting masts, typically between 15m and 20m in height, without the need for planning permission by using the provision of the act which grants such licences for infrastructure running alongside a public road.

While such applications do not require planning permission, they can at present be appealed to An Bord Pleanála.

Would have been helpful if either of them had provided some locations as examples.

The Minister issued a recommendation in 2012 (to Local Authorities) that a register of telecoms structures be maintained. Not clear how widely it's observed or whether it applies to exempted developments.

It is recommended that a register of approved telecommunications structures supported by relevant databases be created and maintained by each planning authority in cooperation with operators. Such a register would provide a useful input to the assessment of future telecommunications developments and would also be useful from the point of view of maximising the potential for future mast sharing and co-location. It is suggested that the register should at least contain coordinates indicting the location, structure(s) height and the planning file reference number.
