Can your GP refer you to a specific specialist or cardiologist? I’m across the pond and unfamiliar with the Irish medical system.

My first thoughts would be go to a different gp, i know that's not always easily done with shortages and such though.. Has your current gp placed you on the 24 hour BP monitor? If not try insist on it, most larger surgeries should have one.

    Two questions:

    1. Have you been prescribe no medication for your blood pressure?
    2. What do you want them to do that they're not doing?

Sounds like you need a new GP or even a web doctor consultation, sending you to an Emergency Department in an emergency ambulance when there is no emergency speaks for itself !

Yeah, that struck me — what happened to you that you had to be brought to hospital in an ambulance?

There are a few things you can do (and you may be doing them already):

    1. Drastically limit your salt intake. Most of your salt intake, typically, is not salt that you add to food but salt already added to processed foods that you buy, so this is a bit of a pain. You will spend a lot of time scrutinising labels and comparing products to find the one with the lowest amount of sodium. You may need to limit or avoid eating out, as you have little or no control over the amount of salt used to prepared your food (and in a lot of places it is used fairly liberally, because it's cheap and delicious and because the chef is not your mother and does not care when you die).
    2. Other dietary changes - consider going on the DASH diet.
    3. At least 30 mins of brisk exercise at least 5 days a week.
    4. There is some evidence that consuming hibiscus tea or beetroot juice is effective to reduce blood pressure. Some people also think potassium supplements can be beneficial, but talk to your doctor before going on them — they may not sit well with your medication.
    5. Avoid or manage stress in your life, though I grant that this is easier said than done.

There are a number of different medications that are used to treat hypertension, and if the ones you are on now are genuinely doing nothing then talk to your GP about trying alternatives. (But, again, you may have been through this already.) But I have to say that some cases of hypertension are just generally resistant to drug treatment.

Before pills become available doctors used to cure that using magnesium, potassium, healthy diet (low sugar) and intermittent / prolong fasting.

    1. Diastolic of 120 especially in the presence of symptoms can be an emergency - Malignant Hypertension - to the Mods and others recommending change of Gp - shame on you. Maybe look for an appointment with your Gp rather than as an emergency case/same day case
    2. Has white coat been rule out - have you gotten a 24 hour ABPM - you could consider a a home monitor over 7 days also . Measuring twice morning and nighttime also. BHS have one.
    3. Lifestyle advice as above
    4. Change medication - two other groups of medication haven't been mentioned . Also could looking at switching the meds your on.
    5. Check Kidney function
    6. . Consider talking to your GP about a referral to the Cardiology Hub in Ballytivnan for further analysis
