Expected official launch in October.

A decent chunk of former 5 Series owners went for the i4 as a short term step until the i5 launch.

What do people think, will it be as successful as the 5 Series has been in Ireland?

Probably looking at the bones of 100k for the i5 M Sport, might be a bridge too far for most as there will be a significant gap between petrol/diesel versions and the BEV version.

I expect this car to be successful but nothing like what the previous generation of 5’s were. It will be simply too expensive. The regular 5 series next generation will be the seller here.

the phev version is the one that will do most business if it’s appreciably cheaper than the i5

Looking at donedeal the cheapest brand new EQE 300 Mercedes is 86k and the cheapest E Class 220D is 72k. They are completely different cars though whereas the i5 and 5 series are apparently much closer to each other. And neither of the Mercedes would be the model I'd be looking to buy if I was in the market. Don't see many EQE on the roads at all, but it is ugly on the outside for sure. Only saw 2 as far as i remember.

I presume the new 5 series phev in msport will be 75k+ compared to 90k+ for a similarly styled i5 meaning a real return to them bring premium, low volume cars and a rare enough sight like they were here until around the year 2000.

That said, I had an e39 2001 530i msport with a new price of 71k 22 years ago and a 2006 e60 523i msport with a new price of 67k 17 years ago (mostly made up of horrendous vrt rates) so there are always buyers, i picked them both up for peanuts in 2008 and 2012....pity those days of cheap used cars are gone.

It still amazes me to see how cheap used ICEs are on auto trader NI or UK compared to this country. It a wonder how anyone buys used EVs there given the current price differential

I'm a BMW fan. I really want to like it. But the design is meh and if a base spec one is going to cost almost as much as a Porsche Taycan, then BMW is in trouble.

No fear of the base i5 coming close to a Porsche Taycan in price especially as Porsche have announced there will be significant price rises coming.

I’ll most likely be going with the i5 next if these planned Porsche price increases hit the Taycan. Rumours for the i5 are an eDrive40, xDrive40 and M50 variant, saloon & touring.

I keep seeing an M60 mentioned with the i5. Whether thats wishful thinking, we shall see.

One of the few affordable family supercars of all time. The engine is just magnificent. But even if the maintenance, tax and running costs were not an issue, could you live long time with that dreadful gearbox? And having owned similarly fast EVs, could you live again with the low torque at idle (even from a 5l V10 racing engine)?

I don't think I could. And please don't tell that judge Zaidan how fast I drove in one on Irish roads 😂

Wouldnt be daily driving it at this stage tbh. Had my S type jag V6 delivered last night and took it for a spin. EVs have spoilt my perception of speed so any fossil fuel car (obviously with some exceptions) feels sluggish by comparison.

I think there will be a captive market for a well priced I5. They are canning a lot of ICE model BMWs in the UK and elsewhere, I reckon a lot of folks who may have bought a non base 5'er in the past may be swayed to an i5 if the price is right. Not your 520d buyer and not your M5 buyer but the chap who buys a 530d for instance.

With recent BMWs being so ugly, I actually like the I4 and I7 styling, I think an i5 could actually look nice too. If they bring that out here before my X plaid and there's an M variant like the I4 M50 it could be a decision.

It’ll be interesting to see how heavy this is. The i4 is a bit of a porker, even for an EV. i5 will obviously be a bigger car so could be up near 2500kg

Same here. I have spent so much doing up our house lately, I wanted a year to recover finances - but if the M60 is reasonable money - I actually think it could be an amazing car - I might be drawn to order. My current 530e X Drive is Jan 2021 new, only 32k km up to date - so loan is up in Jan 24 - could be good timing.

But, I usually would avoid buying a car in first years run - I see the Volvo EX90 is going to be delayed 6-9 months with software issues for example - as I prefer to not be a beta tester.

I was looking at X5 50e, the iX40 and the i5 - I think of the three, the i5 might do myself and the Mrs nicely. Don't need the SUV space, and I have a commercial Kuga for work. I know they say saloons are dead, but I still think they are a nice sporty drive, and probably more efficient in electric versions.

I think you might be disappointed on the "reasonable money" front.

BMW have completely lost the run of themselves. The i4 M50 is in porsche taycan territory with any kind of spec added to it. The i5 M60 will be more expensive again.

I’ll make a prediction that an i5 msport 40 model will be mid 80’s and the m60 about 105/110k when they are launched in Ireland.

any less would pleasantly surprise me.

I'd expect a base i5 to be in the very early 80s. Obviously cruise control + €1k, adaptive cruise + €3k, indicators +€2k, USB port +€1k, aircon + €3k, etc., etc. 😂
