Taking food from food banks when you don’t need it.

a staff member in my sons pre-school informed me today that they had a chocolate Easter bunny for all the children. Her grandfather works in the food bank and she had got them from him.

am I the only one who thinks this is not right as food banks should be for people in need and those chocolates could have been given to a child who may not otherwise get an Easter egg as apposed to children who will get far too many Easter eggs

how do you know those kids will all get loads of Easter eggs?

Food banks always have surplus stock… and lots of it.

aunt of mine works for a homeless charity and she’s is directly involved in feeding homeless people and they the staff are permitted to take some things home… nobody in need goes without, ‘ clients ‘ are fed like royalty in this place but what they stopped doing was giving excess anything to the homeless who’d turn up at staff home time etc… because there’d be a Q once word got around and they’d never get home.

If she is working in a pre school then that isn’t a high income job, she could be struggling with bills and the eggs could indeed be going where there are needed.

Edit - I miss read and thought they were for the pre school persons own children. It does seem very wrong that this happened but maybe there is a reason for it - maybe the food bank got way too many t s far out from Easter and couldn’t store them and would otherwise have binned them. Or maybe the pre school is a community one where a lot of families making use of it are in need and it was just easier to give one for each child rather than assessing who was poor enough.

No, it's not OK for private sector for - profit businesses (ie the pre-school) to be taking stuff from food banks for their clients.

They should also not be giving out chocolate, which is not a healthy food.

I work for a homeless charity and we take home any drugs we find also everyone knows the Easter bunny is not real.

Is the pre-school in a disadvantaged area?

I wouldn't worry too much about Easter eggs being given away, I'd be more annoyed at the grifters who turn up at food banks for freebies when they are not in need. Unfortunately, there's plenty of people who will happily take advantage of the generosity of others.

At face value, it's wrong to take what should be for the needy, but without more information it's hard to say. I can't see why excess chocolate would be given away, doesn't it have a fairly long shelf life?

It depends on the pre school. Is it a private for profit venture or a community unitive in a deprived area?

It does annoy me locally to see people queuing at the food bank when I know they are not short of money or food. There are many people who abuse charity.

Not the modern equivalent of chocolate where cocoa has been largely replaced with cheaper alternatives, especially the chocolate products aimed at children.

To start with, did she specifically tell you that he had taken them from the food bank? Did she tell you that the school had not paid for them? Did you consider the possibility that as he is involved in with a food bank he'd have good contact with food manufacturers and perhaps was arranged for the school to get them at a discount from the manufacturer.

Unless you were specifically told that the eggs were taken from the food bank without payment, you need to stop making such acquisitions.

Where does the food bank get the food. Is it given by supermarket or do the buy and cook it or is it sandwiches?

If it's from supermarket is it soon to go out of date?

Not all pre-schools are private sector, lots of them in the community sector, based in sports clubs or community centres.

Foodcloud , it’s NGO that connects up foodbanks and retailers. Also donations.

I doubt they ask questions because that would humiliate those in genuine need, I'm sure the volunteers raise their eyebrows when they see some people approaching.

It takes a brass neck and lack of shame to accept charity you don't need so I doubt the stingy people care.

Probably less likely to get chancers in smaller communities where they might be recognised.

Here it's not questioned at all. Any body to comes in is given supplies. Those who genuinely need assistance shouldn't have to plead or make their case.

You don't know the full story. So I would advise you not to go off half cocked. There is any number of reasons why or how she obtained the easter eggs.

Why?

Do you know the financial situation of all the parents of all the kids in the pre-school? How do you know one or more childrens parents are not really struggling right now?

Do you know the eggs were definitely not surplus to the food banks requirements?
