So President Joe Biden is coming back to Ireland next month.

His first time here as President of the USA.

He is going go go to the North and the South.

Where will he visit?

How do you feel about it?

As far as The Republic is concerned it'll be a quick revisit to Carlingford and Whitestown then home again. It doesn't bother or excite me either way. No harm in it.

I remember as a very young kid being at the protest against Reagan's visit to Ireland in 1984 (Leftie parents).

USA doesn't seem to be the big bogyman in the world these days, not since the Iraq invasion anyway.

Biden is welcome; it's all showbiz anyway.

There is a throwback. I waited for Reagan when he visited UCG in Galway. His limo went past like greased lightning with his hand (could have been anyone) sticking out of the top of the black glass waving. Such an anti-climax for all of us kids at the time.

Only concern for Biden arriving is the sheer cost to the state of that visit.

I’ve nothing going on that week out of the ordinary so I am unlikely to be inconvenienced to any degree.

Visit will be a bit of hand shaking, baby kissing and rolling out well worn platitudes at various ‘significant’ locations and the media lapping it all up like there is no tomorrow.

about a 10-15 million euro security bill for the visit. By my researching / googling.

Yeah it seems that way, unlike Obama who's only came to light after research by some genealogist and at that they were 8th cousins, i.e sharing a great great great great great great great grandparent.

Biden's are much closer, third cousins i.e people that he shares a great great grandparent with living in Ireland.

Well his mother's a finnegan and Boyle his connections are fairly straight line 2 generations back to cooley in louth on one side and mayo on the other. You could argue the family were more practising typical irish music stories and pastimes than the Kennedys tbh.

Hopefully Biden tries to push for Irish unity while he's here. Then it would be worthwhile. Pushes the idea of a border poll. Also, shows the merits and benefits of a United Ireland with strong American support.

I honestly think it's not just Catholics or nationalists but those who were unionists see the benefits of a United Ireland. A border poll is a real poll, let's see where we stand. Basing decisions on small sample polls isn't wise.

Why not see where we stand? We can then look again in 7 years. I think the opposite of you. Middle class Catholics and protestants are saying to themselves, why not go with the new, exciting option and not get bogged down with Brexit and being the ignored child. Biden pushing for a border poll is acceptable to all sides. That's all sides who favour democracy anyway.

Exactly! Newspaper polls etc are absolutely pointless. Let's get a border poll called and then have all the details of what we'll be voting on made clear for everyone. People can debate on the positives and negatives, people like Biden can show what support America would give for a United Ireland. The British government can argue for staying in the union. All the facts laid out bare and then let democracy do it's thing.

It'll take decades of negotiations though. People will want to know exactly what's going to happen with their health services,bin collection,taxes etc. It would be an absolute logistical nightmare.

That's nonsense in fairness. It's not like something like this has never happened before. There is no rush in this but calling a border poll for a few years time will give plenty of time to outline what will happen. It's not like East and West Germany reuniting. Things won't be hugely different than we have now but obviously there would be EU membership benefits, protestant farmers would especially benefit from that, lasting peace benefits, it will heal wounds and let us all develop and prosper as one.

I think Biden speaking about it from this viewpoint will work well and push the idea forward. He could also push the idea in private with the British government.
