Yep, I don't imagine many people will use it for those direct journeys. It's more about the intermediate stops not currently served by anyone.

That’s not what this is for - it’s for the areas that are not already served along the way - in either direction.

1.5hrs one way so you wouldn't want to be in a rush as it winds all over the place, but I suppose that's the point of this kind of local bus service! very welcome for those without a motor

Exactly. The LocalLink is for a totally different demographic, who probably will know what the indigenous-language place names mean, and won't be so fussed about 9am.

Can't see the confusion with the Irish place names, Cor an Dula, Baile an Dulaigh, Cluain Bu. Come on it's hardly rocket science. And add to that the names are in both languages on the timetable anyway.

That's true of the dial-a-ride services, but many of the regular service routes that have been launched or upgraded in the last few years do now offer the ability for people to live in rural Ireland and commute to nearby towns and cities, and that's a goal of the Connecting Ireland programme.

Agree on the compass of the map it's the wrong way around. The Irish place names are in the Gaeltacht areas so makes sense.

Looks like this route will be using a new full electric bus. Any ideas on the capacity of these? That early bus would fill up fast after Headford to Galway I think

    They have fixed the map.

It’s unlikely to be used for Headford to Galway journeys as both Burkes and Bus Éireann already have direct services along the N84.

This service goes around in loops to serve local communities.

It’s really for journeys from Tuam to Headford, from Headford to the Gaeltacht areas, and from the Gaeltacht areas to Galway city, and I suspect one bus will be sufficient to start with.

They've fixed the orientation of the map

They still have Ballindooley and Menlo in the wrong places. And they seem to have the route going in the Dyke Road, which I presume will not be happening unless they've managed to find a magic bus that will fit under a 2.28m bridge clearance.

Still not right, need to swop the Galway and Tuam in the DARK BLUE / NAVY section

It will have to go down the coolough road beside the menlo park hotel and in past the shopping centre.

Interested to see the details of this new electric bus fleet. Does look like it will be based in Headford

The electric bus operated by Martley’s in Laois for Local Link has 26 seats and space for a wheelchair.

I would imagine this will be similar.

It looks like this is the EV bus the NTA went with for these routes. First impressions are it's impressive.

Whatever about any other features, the ramp for disabled users is a massive improvement and brings those rural buses in line with the city buses. I'm just curious if there will be a dedicated space for wheelchairs or will it require pre-booking.

Working happening around the Westend for the summer street closures

I saw one of those on the new Tuam-Galway route this morning at around the right time it should be passing the location I was at. Presumably it was on a test run ahead of the route starting next week. It had HB&C on the digital display. Is that Healy's, I wonder?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,062 ✭✭✭_Puma_

I saw the same yesterday evening. Checking the battery range I suspect, might have some changes on the timetable yet.

Could be Healys and it's prob going to be in a yard in Headford when off service. It does a run Headford Tuam first thing and the reverse when finishing up. Is there charging capabilites at the cathedral stop I wonder.

A new timetable published by Cllr James Charity (who was a mover behind this route) shows an earlier start. I haven't seen it on any official website yet.

This is welcome announcement, all Cllr's in the city voted to support a motion to get walking & cycling facilities along the coast road to Oranmore village.

Thing is though, half the road is covered by the city council and half is covered by the county council and the route is also within the scope of the Galway-Dublin greenway.

Excuse the cynic in me but this looks like a case of voting to do something that was on the cards anyway

Also, the city councillors have a proven record of recommending something, as it sounds good, but then rowing back on the plans when presented to them!

This one is definitely only a distraction I fear!

Mow that the Galway Clinic junction is nearing completion, has anyone else noticed just how narrow the one outbound traffic lane is on the old Dublin Rd outbound between the two sets of traffic lights?

I was driving around Galway yesterday for the first time in a while and go to go through the new Headford rd junction.

In terms of layout, meh, its grand, could do with a bit of pre-junction signage in terms of which lane to go for but otherwise its grand.

The sequence durations though, fk me. I was coming down the Headford rd a few times as i was helping someone to move and I was blown away at how short the green light was for cars coming down that road. On one trip I was the 12th car when I got to the junction and it took 3 sequences to get through. Even when I go to the junction, I was the 2nd car, moved on the green and wasn't through the junction before it went to red again. It has to be the shortest green light I've ever seen anywhere. Maybe its different for peak time hours

The newest conversion from a RAB to lights, Kirwan is it, can't recall what the RAB used to be called off the top of my head. The one at the Maldron is what I'm referring to

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,726 ✭✭✭✭zell12

Kirwan junction opened in July 2021.

It's not an issue for motorists since it was tweaked in late 2021, those coming from Headford inbound normally get plenty of time as do those coming from Sandy Rd. It is a huge issue for pedestrians and to a lesser extent cyclists

Having said that, it a massive improvement on the roundabout.

Maybe it was just the times I was going through it so. Granted there weren't large volumes coming from the Headford side of the junction versus much larger numbers on the other arms so it does make a lot of sense, just surprised me.

I guess its similar to the junction on between SQR & Circular Rd beside the Westside pitches. The very short durations coming from the Circular Rd side probably serve very well to disuade rat-running. Thats something I hadn't considered earlier for Kirwan and I know there were issues with rat running through that area so maybe this helps with that too

Inconveniencing car-users is one of the things you want, I do recall.

Any particular reason you didn't follow your principles and use a cargo bike for the job?

Check out my later post on the topic where it made more sense after I thought about it more 😉

As for the cargo bike, I don't have one for the same reason I don't have a car, don't have need of one. Might look at getting one at some point in the future if the need arises but a folding ebike has caught my eye for the moment as it more meets my current needs

You'll be pleased to know I did use GoCar though, a great service

    MOD NOTE

Please don't put other posters road use under the microscope, it's what eventually led to the closure of transport/logistics threads before.. We discuss how one gets around their environment in general terms.
