EWI & Windows

Currently in the process of getting prices for EWI and new windows.

Can’t say the process has been easy. First, BER assessor for the One Stop Shop said our house was cavity wall not cavity block. Clearly women know nothing about house construction and my husband was called to check and I was even asked to subject our surveyors report to confirm what I said.

Anyways, I’m getting conflicting information about how the work should be carried out.

1 company wants to remove the soffit and fascia and bring the insulation up to the attic eaves. Other company saying this isn’t necessary. We’ll be replacing gutters, soffit and fascia regardless.

New windows. 1 company has said to replace them in the same position that they are in now. Some houses in our estate had new windows installed prior to EWI and had them pushed out online with the current brick wall.

1 company want to have the gas box moved to accommodate the EWI other is saying they’ll go around it and put a door over the gas box so no need to move.

Trying to navigate this and make the best decisions as it’s a lot of money to hand over.

    Insulation needs to be continuous.

Continuous around the whole external fabric, and joined at the roof to the external fabric.

Windows should be installed in this line of insulation ideally. Most likely, as close as practicable.

I think you're talking with two completely different companies. I'd run a mile from the one who says you can put a door over a gas meter.

I haven't looked at IS 813 in years, but I doubt you can make a gas meter box airtight. To stop heat loss, it would need to be airtight.

As an aside, with the works you're proposing to do to the house, you could be suitable for a heat pump.

Definitely consider an mvhr system as your house will be a lot more airtight after these works

Our plan was to install a heat pump as well but having looked at the quotes we’ve received windows and EWI are the only measures we can afford to complete right now. We’ve already upgraded the heating system with control panels and a new boiler when we moved in a number of years ago so will make do with that for now.

Could you stretch to getting some xps insulation on the walls below ground level.
