I know of at least one car done this way - an E30 320i imported from Japan to Dublin, which spent an additional bit of time in Belgium being registered there first.

And customs accepted it or was there any push back ?

Should add, you really need to run the figures on it - you're adding an additional transport leg to the import, which will easily consume 1k when all is said and done. If I was importing an NSX from Japan, it would be heading to Belgium first and I'd drive it back. If it's something lower value I'd be avoiding the hassle.

I know a few dealers who do this but I've never heard of a private individual doing it.

What's the difference? Google says Belgian VAT is 21%. Or is there something else I'm missing?

    You're doing it wrong

"Importing classic cars older than 30 years to the Netherlands and Belgium is fiscally very attractive because you do not pay import duties. An additional advantage is that we have warehouses in Belgium and the Netherlands, so you pay 9% VAT in the Netherlands and only 6% VAT in Belgium, at no extra cost."

So just to be clear, is this a feasible way to import a car from the UK to Ireland?

Can you buy the car in the UK? Import it into the EU via Belgium (and pay 6% VAT) and duty? And then drive to Ireland without paying further VAT and duty?

Seems too good to be true? Would VRT still have to be paid in Ireland... just occurs to me that's capped at €200 for a classic.
