Noise after timing belt change

    Evening all!

2010 1.8tdci Ford Galaxy. Upper belt with a lower chain.

Changed the timing belt yesterday, followed the proper procedure and used the tools for locking the camshaft, crankshaft, and flywheel.

I set the timing belt tensioner too tight (lined up the line after the gap instead of the gap), put it all back together, and there was a bit of a "woooo" noise at low revs, changing pitch with the revs.

I realised my mistake with the tensioner, and re-did the whole thing this evening.

The noise is still there, albeit less than before. I am certain the tensioner is set correctly, and the correct torque applied to the tensioner bolt and the camshaft pulley bolt.

Is this noise common after changing the timing belt? I'm not doing it again, the car can die if it's wrong at this stage!

    Thanks, Ken.

Thought they were all wet belts after 2007 but thats not your problem at the minute. Was the tensioner bearing ok or did you replace it? Had you the alternator belt off & did it go back on running in the same direction? Pour a bit of water down on it with the car idling, just to see if it changes the noise

Whoever had the car before me did a wet belt to chain conversion, the tensioner pin is the chain model. It was done at Ford, so it must have cost a bit!

The timing belt tensioner was replaced with the belt.

The alternator belt was off, and I can't be sure of the direction. It has no markings and I didn't mark it either. It's not an old belt, only went in the car 6 months ago.

The noise isn't actually there on Idle, it starts just above idle until about 2000 rpm. It sounds like a noise I had on a previous car when the timing belt tension was too much, but i'm certain I have it set correctly!

Maybe it will settle down soon.
