Hive replacing Mechanical Timer Switch Query

Hi,

Old timer switch and hive pics below. I cannot figure out the wiring. Should the Neutral/Earth be together as the old timer, seems strange. Any help wiring this appreciated. I had thought the black wire went to the thermostat outside in the boiler but cannot confirm that. Any idea what the black wire is and purpose?
