And maybe Dave Fanning from 4 🤔

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,140 ✭✭✭gipi

So he'll be in direct competition with his successor on RTE radio 1? Surprised that the radio mandarins allowed that!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭RINO87

So taking a step back by going from a one hour daily show, to a three hour daily show? This will hardly be live.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,831 ✭✭✭GSF

According to Will he will be live

He'll be voicetracked after a few early live outings.

So, they're now spending a relative fortune in wages on a webstream that is NOT a radio station. Will there be a multi-million Euro marketing and promotion campaign to back it up?

    To what end?

What the hell is all this for? Is this even a thing RTE should be spending money on?

By the way, this is not a criticism of Collins, Leahy, Rick or any of them. The likes of Sunshine, Q102 etc. should be breaking the door down looking for them - not mothballed with licence fee money. Not even on the radio. This is wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,400 ✭✭✭Glaceon

I'd much rather spend my licence fee money on Gold than 2FM. At least the former plays a lot of music that you won't hear anywhere else. It deserves a more accessible slot on some sort of radio platform.

The problem is that the independent stations in Dublin aimed at the over 45s don't seem to want to spend any money on recruitment. Sunshine has had the same lineup consisting of about 4 djs since about 2011, Q102 has the same DJ on from 5pm till Midnight. Nova did take a punt on hiring John Clarke but it didn't work out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,118 ✭✭✭Expunge

    Well, yes, that's the point.

But there's not a hope in hell the independent sector will stand for an RTE Gold regular radio service own it's on FM frequency. So, increasing amounts of public money is being spent on this webstream, primarily because managers elsewhere don't want these presenters on their 'regular' services anymore - including Ronan Collins.

Why retain talent at quite a bit of expense when they're not broadcasting or being properly promoted?

    It looks anti-competitive.

The commercial sector have gotten lazy. They know that they can keep doing the same old boring thing because nobody else will be licensed to take them on. The refusal to grant any DAB licences is the real anti-competitive thing to me.

Ronan himself has said that he received plenty of offers from other stations but all with the same "we'll tell you what to play" rule. He'd be wasted on a programme like that.

Why the endless obsession with FM? The world has moved on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,400 ✭✭✭Glaceon

Ease of access. Plus I still have problems with streams rebuffering while travelling.

We don't all live in 5G or the infamous 'National Broadband' land......

So will take quite a while for the world to move on!

This whole thing should prove beyond reasonable doubt that the media lies

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,831 ✭✭✭GSF

He hadn’t even started yet so you can’t prove he’s not live unless you have a Time Machine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

Strange taking Rick off 10 - 1 and putting him on 1 - 4. Rick is very popular in that slot with the WFH listeners that used to listen to him in the 00s on 2FM.

You would think Ronan would be better suited to the 1 - 4 slot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,647 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

i thought that myself. the music rick plays is completly different to what Ronan Collins played in his R1 slot so a lot of listeners are gonna be confused when they hear Ronan play country songs if he sticks to what he did on R1.

Better than the music choice of Louise Duffy. Looking forward to the switch.

Neither does the UK population, but they invest in DAB offerings regardless.

Ronan hasn't done 3 hours a day, 5 days a week of live radio since about 1982, this is a massive increase of work for a man who announced in December that he "decided to step back"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭RINO87

Plenty of time for Alice's Restaurant.....!

A lot of people still have shite internet service.

RTE Gold isn't even listed in the RTE guide which I always thought was a missed opportunity for some minimum basic advertising. I'd wager a lot of Ronan Collins fans are RTE Guide buyers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 167 ✭✭Hodges

Rick's show isn't always as live as you'd think. He often did book, music and movie reviews on the morning shows on RTE Radio's 1 and 2!

Yesterday Rick rang in sick so automation replaced him, that just goes to show that gold isn't considered a proper station by RTE.

Will was interviewing Ronan a few minutes ago. Boards got a passing mention in it.

Mr. Mister 😎.....I don't think Ronan is in control of the playlist!

Edit: Here's Cliff Richard, normal service is resumed.

The dead giveaway will be if he plays "In a monsatery Garden", the theme from Reilly Ace of Spies or that bloody song about the cows with guns.

I don't think this format suits him, he'd be better off doing a version of his old R1 lunchtime show for 2 hours on a Sunday afternoon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,916 ✭✭✭Red Fred

I tuned earlier but tuned out after a short while. The show doesn't have the same momentum/feeling as his old show and is probably too long. The novelty will soon wear off both for the listener and Ronan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭RINO87

Definitely a different show, and sounds to be setting up for voice tracking/ automation with very little in the way of listener interaction. Still, good to hear Ronan again and some good tunes in there.

I heard Ronan say near the start of his show that he wouldn't be mentioning everyone who contacts him, which is different to his R1 show, but certainly it would seem that voicetracking is on the cards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

I think a better idea would've been to have Rick on 9 to 12 and Ronan on from 12 to 1 (similar to his ol R1 show)

3 hours is too long and the music that is being played is very different to Rick

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭rolling boh

Has Ronan played any Linda Ronstadt yet ?

His playlist seems to be a pretty standard RTE gold classic hits playlist. No big Tom or Red Herley in sight

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭RINO87

We did get Lee Marvin tho 😂

It is actually a lot different than the current and very broad RTE Gold playlist !!

It is quite like the RTE Gold playlist from back in 2007 where they played bog standard Greatest Hits of the 60s, 70s, 80s that you'd find on such compilation CDs

I wonder will Dave Fanning's show be daily? Fanning is well used to voice tracking as he was doing a Sunday night Vted show on 2fm almost 20 years ago and then did it 5 nighs a week in the early 2010s. Voice tracking is completely new to Ronan Collins tho and I didn't think he'd be interested in doing it.

Is Collins Voice tracked already? His show is now doing a "guess the year" classic 10 at 10. It's a surprise that he agreed to do RTE Gold, it's likely this format will appeal to none of his former R1 listeners.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,118 ✭✭✭Expunge

He wants to get out of the house from time to time and not drive to Donnybrook every day. Keep his hand in as it were and keep the golf handicap down. It doesn't really matter who likes it or not. This is RTE we're talking about. We can pay for it, though.

RTE Gold - the not a radio station with a mid-table Premier League wage bill.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

Ronan is heavily scripted and sounds defo voicetracked - he is not giving out contact numbers for listener requests.

    The 10 at 10 was 1992 yesterday and today's year is 1963.

The late Larry Gogan also wasn't able to do voicetracking without sounding extremely heavily scripted

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭RINO87

Voice tracked for sure. Ronan often let the intro to a song play as a bed while he introduced it. None of that happening.

Funny you mentioned Larry Gogan's voice tracking or recorded shows, they were terrible!!! I don't know why, but for some reason when he was doing a recorded show, he ended up sounding like Robbie Irwin reading a sports report 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 98 ✭✭ZaK23-54

Any one know which shows on RTÉ Gold are not voicetracked?

Will Leahy is normally live for the first 2 hours and Rick O'Shea is live most of the time but the entire weekend is voice traced/pre recorded

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 98 ✭✭ZaK23-54

Much of BBC Radio 2 is recorded at the weekend. I have no problem with a pre recorded show - but voice tracking is an insult to the listener.

My biggest problem with RTÉ Gold is there are very few shows that specialise on types and decades of music..
