Looking to buy a second hand Sailboat [Need advice]

    Hello everyone.

Since a while ago the idea of purchasing a second hand sailboat has been going around my head but I am a bit confused when it comes to sailing regulations in Ireland, so I come to you seeking advice if you could give it to me.

The type of boat I am looking to purchase is something similar to a Leisure 17 and the questions I have around the whole thing are the following:

    1. Do I need a boat license to buy and sail it in Ireland?
    2. Where I live (Cork) I see a lot of boats moored to the canal (only mooring lines with floaters). Do those cost anything? If I was to purchase a boat could I, for example, assemble my own mooring line and leave it in the Passage West canal?
    3. I have been taking a look to ships around the country and I see quite a few I'm interested in but far away (like Limerick, Dublin, Galway etc...) Would it be a feasible thing to sail all the way to Cork? Also, if arranging a transport service, how much could those be?
    4. I would also appreciate if anyone has any experience in maintenence. Which parts of it could I do myself, how much are they including pulling the boat out of the water etc.

    Thanks a lot beforehand!

    Eloy

    Some quick responses:

    1. No license required. Only license required is if the boat has a (fixed) radio/VHF.
    2. Not sure about Cork, but certainly in Dublin (and surrounding areas) you would have to have permission and usually pay annually for a mooring. Ask in a local sailing/yacht club about mooring or ask the harbour master/Cork Port Authority.
    3. Unless you are a very experienced sailor (or have one with you) I would not attempt sailing from Dublin or Limerick or Galway (to Cork), especially for first trip on a new boat! Have a google - there are a couple of specialist boat transport companies out there that you could contact for a cost, or, for a relatively small boat, look for a boat with a road trailer that you could tow yourself?
    4. For a relatively small boat, most, if not all maintenance could be done by you, especially if handy at DIY. For most things these days there is a Youtube video!
