Customs & VAT on U.K Imports

Hi all,

Was wondering if anyone on here has imported a car from the U.K after January 1st 2021?

I’m curious to know how you work out the customs duty on the car? Also, is the VAT worked out at 10% of the vehicle price or 23%?

If anyone could shed light on this I’d be very grateful.

VAT is 23%, customs duty is 10% both based off the invoice price plus shipping/transport cost afaik.

AFAIK if you are buying from a dealer over there, they don’t have to charge you VAT as the car is being exported so that will drop the price straight away.

That only applies if its a VAT qualifying car, they can't deduct VAT otherwise.

No, they all have VAT included - unless they're VAT qualifying. A VAT qualifying car is a car originally sold to a business for commercial use, when resold the garage can sell it on without the VAT

If you look on autotrader.co.uk, and search for VAT qualifying in keywords you'll find stock where it applies. It will always be mentioned in the advert, because they're attractive to people looking to import to the EU.
