Speakers to tv - is there an attachment I can buy?

A friend has asked me to hook up existing speakers to a TV. Speakers were there when he moved in, 1 in each corner of the room and are wired back to a location near tv but are just standard speaker cable with no connectors. Should I use banana plugs or what's the best thing to do?

I have AV receiver myself purchased from richer sounds but don't want to go down that route with this guy just yet. Simply want to hook up the speakers as external speakers for the moment

Tv is a Samsung ue55 6400 from about 2014/15.

You’ll need an amp of some sort. A cheap hifi stereo system would work well. I got a Philips unit for €60 a few years ago that does the job. Just make sure it has an external audio input (jack socket) or twin phonos and that the tv has an external audio output. Using an optical connection might be a possibility too but it’s complete overkill for stereo and would end up costing more.

You would unfortunately require some sort of amplifier to connect both the TV and the speakers too.

You could go for something like the fantastic Denon DRA800 which is current on a deal at 479 Euro

It has HDMI inputs for connecting his TV and other sources. it also have 4 speaker terminals and can run the 2 pairs of speakers in stereo.

You could also use the Sony STRDH190 and connect it to the TV via optical. Priced at 295 Euro.

There would be no way to just connect the speaker cables into the TV unfortunately.

OK, that has given me a bit of food for thought...I have the Sony STR myself, not sure if its the 190 but its defo a lower end one. Like the sound from it but nothing really to compare it to.

I also have following 5.1 speaker system bought from your good selves also paired to the Sony.

If I was to upgrade to the Denon like the above, or something similar, what benefits would I get over and above the lower range Sony when paired to my speaker system?

I could potentially sell the Sony to him for 100 euro or thereabouts

I am a bit clueless on audio but I know I like my setup, however I dont know anybody with a better AV receiver or speakers so nothing to compare it to.

I watch streaming services, live sport, just bought a PS5 and an LG CS6 TV, also stream music via spotify and youtube. Dont really use any physical media any more these days. Worth the upgrade for me?

If you are currently running a 5.1 system I would not upgrade to the the Denon DRA800 as it is only a stereo amp and can not produce surround sound.

If you wanted to stick with 5.1 then it would be either the Sony 790 priced at 469 Euro. This can run 5.1.2 for Dolby Atmos.

Or in a Denon there is the fantastic AVRX28000 coming in at 879 Euro. This can run 5.1.2 for Dolby Atmos. This has HDMI 2.1 also to pass through 120Fps for the new gen consoles.
