Have had good eyesight all my life but after hitting 50 , i need to strain a bit more reading , nothing too major but definetly feel my eyes tireder in recent months . Thinking of getting reading glasses as oppossed to going to opticians as i can read fine but not for too long.

Anyone any similar complaints or advice ?

Get your eyes tested, you'll need a different prescription for each eye. You can get a free eye test and free frames on your PRSI/medical card, by the sounds of it you won't need fancy lenses so don't cause further damage by just picking glasses to suit your weaker eye.

If you want fancier frames you still get a discount to the value of the free frames.

    Don't bother

Get your eyes tested and get prescription reading glasses

The cheap readers will give you a headache

I'm in need of reading glasses, but I don't get headaches. I suspect you may be over-connecting the issues.

I'd say go to the opticians and get sorted properly and they can also look at your eyes just encase you've any other issues going on with them.

Those €5 glasses you pick up aren't really worth bothering.

Look after your eyes, a test and prescription glasses is the way to go.

Mine are aldi glasses at E3 many years ago.. trying to get mainland optician appointments within the limited time I can be offisland between ferries defeated me. They are fine for crafts and reading as they simply magnify as a magnifying glass you hold does.

Mine are prescription ones but there’s good ones in applegreen on the motorways . Maybe someone could pick some up?

Been using them for decades and no headaches. They simply magnify... OF COURSE if you get a headache then yes you need to get that checked but else all is well..

I got tested and got mine in Specsavers. Never again. They're way worse than the cheapo ones I got in Lidl.

Mind you, maybe the problem is where I got the test and the glasses...

Started to get tired eyes when I hit 40. It's called presbyopia. It'll happen to nearly everyone eventually. I went into a chemist and bought a pair of +1 glasses and was sorted in an instant. I'm the wrong side of 45 now and need +2's.

Go to an optician FFS and have your eyes checked. If nothing else, it's no harm to have the general health of your eyes checked out. You'll get your test covered by PRSI and you can walk out of there with your prescription in your hand.

In agreement with everyone else... get an eye test and, if required, some cheap (free) prescription near distance glasses.

I carry a pair of off the shelf reading glasses with me (thin and foldable attached to the back of my phone) for when I forget to carry my prescription glasses with me. They are handy enough when you have no other option and need to read a menu, but the difference between them and my "real" glasses is night and day. Eyes only degrade and lenses that are mismatched to your requirements speed up this degradation very quickly indeed.
