F&E. Tank near boiling

Hi folks

My f&E tank in atic is extremely hot its heating up from the feed pipe

I have stove with back boiler and oil heating

Had Plumber look at it but can't figure it out hoping to find a brain box here

I don't know if any of you are interested, but the correct nomenclature is, the one at the bottom is the expansion pipe (or feed and expansion pipe) and the one hooking in over the top is the vent.

In normal operation the expanding water expands up both pipes, but because the vent is higher, it should never come out of the vent. It should just expand into the tank and rise the water level there and the level falls again after it cools.

Might save some confusion when describing such situations in future.

Is it a zoned system?

does this only happen when stove it lit?

What type/settings are on your circulation pump(s)

You need to ascertain if the hot water is coming up the feed pipe when the solid fuel boiler (SFB) is heating the system, with the Oil boiler off - OR vice versa.

Many Plumbers do not understand solid fuel boilers systems when linked to oil/gas boilers.

I had a similar problem when the SFB was heating it was causing hot water to rise up in the 12 mm grey feed pipe from the F&E tank, and heating the water in the tank.

In the photo below the 12 mm grey Feed pipe was connected to the 25 mm Return pipe of the SFB, as the pipe came out of the Hot Water Cylinder.

The solution to solving this, because hot water will rise up, was to fit a downturn on the 12mm feed pipe where it connected to the 25 mm Return pipe, as seen in the photo below

A few mm of the grey feed pipe can be seen at the top of the photo.

Your plumber should do this and see does it work.

had the same last week, some of the radiators were not heating. There was a blockage somewhere with some hunk of some sort that the plumber found.

Sometimes rads will not heat due to an Airlock in the pipes.

I am unsure what a ‘hunk’ in a heating system is.

I meant a blockage of “gunk”, could have been an airlock as the tank had ran dry at some point due to lime on the ball cock.

Plumber fixed it and said just said there was a blockage. F&e tank has been 70 degrees plus I would say.

There are 3 pipes connected to your Heating Feed & Expansion Tank:-

1. The mains water supply pipe. Usually 12 mm pipe
2. Feed pipe to your heating system. Usually 12 mm pipe.
3. Expansion pipe. This is not directly connected to the tank and is positioned to enable water from the heating system to flow in to the F&E tank. Usually 18 mm or 25 mm pipe.

Do you know if the hot water from the heating system is entering the F&E tank from the 12 mm Feed pipe. Or is the hot water entering the tank from the Expansion pipe.

it was entering from a pipe at the top pouring in over the tank. Assume that the expansion pipe.
