Wooden stairs

HI All,

Happy new year to you all.

We have bought a new building and are considering going with wood for stairs instead of carpet. Some people told us there might be a squeaky noise if we go with wooden stairs.

Just trying to get an opinion on which is best.

Wood creaks. It doesnt really matter if its used in floors, stairs, roofs etc it will creak.

If a timber stair is made correctly with glue and screws- there should not be any squeaking noise from the stair.

If a stair is making a squeaking noise, eliminate the cause of the noise before fitting the carpet with proper underlay.

Locate the part of the timber stair that is causing the noise, open up the joint a few mm - pump in wood glue, and drive in a few 60 mm long screws.

The noise is usually between a tread and the risers above and /or below the tread.

Sometimes the noise could be between the tread and the Strings.

Fitting Carpet on a stair will neither cause or eliminate a squeaky noise caused by timber components rubbing against each other.

Wood is also slippy, esp if you're in socks. I say this as someone who nearly killed myself on a well-worn wooden bedroom floor this morning.

It's also very loud, you'll hear every footstep up and down unless everyone tippy-toes all the time.
