Whats the fascination of seeing where you live on TV?

I was going to post this in Psychology but I thought I'd get more sensible answers here.

So what is the fascination of seeing the town where you live on TV? I just don't get it. if you want to see where you live, go take a walk.

A lot of folk I know detest where they live, but start fawning when they see it on TV and encourage others to watch it. ie: "Did you see the town on TV last night, didn't it look great" etc. when ordinarily they cant stand the place.

What inner psychological need does such behaviour satisfy, and are you a practitioner of it?

living in a giant castle, i feel proud when my giant castle is on TV - whether that be for an ad, a TV show, a movie or a documentary.

i just love my giant castle

I'd expect this might have been triggered by the recent success of the Banshees of Inish etc etc and the media reports from locals in Achill and Inis Meain.

I'd expect it's down to pride in where one comes from, particularily in the case of any of the islands. Pride in it's beauty and pride in it's welcoming nature.

The sense of belonging we have to a place (in cases where we genuinely like the place) and the satisfaction that others agree with us - we are lucky to come from such a place.

I know you mention town in your post but the last few weeks and months and potentially the next few have given massive global to coverage to those two islands in particular - why shouldn't locals be proud.

(Granted the context of they they are on TV is important)

I wouldn't have been a fan of the film storyline etc but to hear the actors single the places out for praise was refreshing!

You generally watch programs that were filmed in your own area to see did you know anybody that was shown from the area.

The same people are usually on the news after something awful saying , “Nothing like this ever happens here , we are in shock , it’s a very quiet place”
