12V Car Battery to supply Shed LED lights

Hi All,

Im trying to light my garden shed using a 12V car battery and some LED lights and so far I have been unsuccessful. I have 12V Car battery (Fully Charged) and a 230V LED lights but I have bypassed the 230V/12V switching circuity and gone straight to the LED fitting. In my head its a very simple circuit but I have not been able to get it to work.

Any advise would be gratefully received.

Dunno but this is not something you would do on new work

You would use solar panel and pir led lighting I would presume if there's no power available

If you was convert to 12v should be okay, but need to know what type of LED, sometime need to calculate the Ampire to make sure sufficient power and to avoid power supplier fast burning. If you wrong install for (-) (+) might be the LED cannot use anymore because of all DC.

you could run this with a turbine or some solar panels as a charger for the battery

I'm confused. You mean that the LED's are 230v and you bypassed the internal voltage-dropper and rectifier?

In most of the LED lamps the LED's are in series and the V-drop across all of them is around 30V or more, some are 100V even. So please clarify what circuit you have and we can help.

Some LED clusters will work at much more than 12V. OP needs to put it back to mains and then check the voltage (and polarity) at the point he is now connecting his 12V battery.

Hi Alexander,

I bypassed the LED driver/rectifier and went straight from the terminals of the battery to the terminals on the LED light disk. I have now been advised that I should you install an inline resistance to limited the power going to the LED's. I havent tried it yet but Im hoping I haven't burnt out the LED's.

I was hoping to avoid the use of an inverter. Its a very simply circuit with a very small load so I think the capitol expense should be limited. If I wanted to have other devices in the shed like a television then the inverter would be a good idea.

I suspect you're using mains LED bulbs that are in fact clusters of individual LED's

You should experiment with individual LED's connected to a simple battery, such as AA for example

You can practically weld with a car battery so it's too dangerous to experiment with. Either way, there should be a suitably small fuse, connected in series, on the lead from the car battery.

Diodes work in one direction only, so polarity matters.

@Pentax could I suggest using MR11 LED bulbs instead as these are already 12v with a voltage controller onboard and will do what you are looking for without the need for an additional DC:DC converter.

Would second what 10-10-20 suggested (post 12) Also consider a deep cycle battery instead of car battery and trickle charge it with a cheap & cheerful solar panel off Amazon Ebay or similar. The set up will last years.

I get bored easily and the thought of making space to take an LCD apart replacing components within its depths, putting it back together only to find the backlights still didn't work would p!ss me off. The whole job takes about an hour (youtube video for exact same screen). So for €25 I thought the tool was a good idea, the backlights are just short of €25 so hopefully the full job will cost less than €50 which I think is reasonable to get a decent LED screen back working.

I do have my doubts if the specialised niche tool will work? I must try it on some cheap LED's first. Hopefully the electronics in it are better than the spelling on the front panel.

Your right in everything you mentioned. i was using mains LED bulbs and was trying to bypass the rectification circuitry. I have looked at using individual LED's with 1.5A batteries in series and it has worked.
