I have one steel rim that has had a slow puncture for years. Had a fella put new tyre on recently and same problem, only worse. Doesn't look obviously damaged where the air is pishing out but is there a big chance the rim is beyond redemption and I just need a new one?

Can happen. I actually had one break - extreme cold (by Irish standards, -12) and hit a pothole.

Yeah they can get hairline cracks and leak air. Had it happen twice on an Opel Vivaro.

Spraying soapy water all over it (take it off the car first) should tell you where the leak is, even if it's a slow puncture.

My wife's car had two of those, took several weeks for the warning on the dashboard for low tyre pressure to come on, so VERY slow puncture, but it was clearly bubbling away. (in this case it was that the alloys had corroded a bit and it was leaking past the valves)
