Some heavy echoes on the radar over Wicklow. Snow line for today was around 500/600m when I checked it yesterday. Would be lively up there now

Was awoken last night just before 12am by a big clap of thunder. North Wexford. There was a very heavy shower at that time too.

Instability tomorrow as a trough approaches and passes over the country from early morning. Parameters there for some isolated thunderstorm activity , mostly over the sea where instability is greatest given the still relatively warm waters, mild surface and mid level airs and colder airs aloft. A decent amount of shear giving lapse rates that could produce some big convective showers with hail possible and gusty local conditions. Will see if any thunderstorms make it inland.

Irish sea could be quite active as thunderstorm activity peaks in the later afternoon with the best available convergence but probably most active moving away towards the UK.

Quite active early morning, a few rumbles here near Tralee a short time ago and the sky went incredibly dark with heavy rain following, brightened up again.

A couple of rumbles of thunder in Lucan. It is so dark it's hard to believe it's only lunchtime. Miserable. Bring back the cold snap!

Crack of thunder here in Dublin 18, just as I’m leaving for a few pints in town

Good few flashes of lightning around Cork Harbour in the last 30 minutes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,913 ✭✭✭Danno

Heard a couple rumbles of thunder here in south Laois after midday, it was from the storm that kicked off over the Castlecomer Plateau.

Fair sup of rain in those showers - up over 10mm here in the Davis Rain Gauge since 9am. Current temperatures are 7.4c.

Worst( best) display in years , heavy hailstone now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,194 ✭✭✭Elmer Blooker

    What’s causing these thunderstorms?

I always thought winter thunderstorms were caused by very active cold fronts hitting Tm air with a huge temperature gradient on either side of the front, the type of fronts that give squall lines.

You wouldn’t think such an ordinary looking occlusion could cause these storms?

Lots of hail thunder and lightning in East Cork now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,443 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

Looks very intense around the south coast. Nothing up here apart from rain

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,913 ✭✭✭Danno

More thunder here in south Laois, this time coming from the south of here. Looking at Real Time Lightning Map :: LightningMaps.org and it seems to be over nearby North Kilkenny.

Some flashes and bangs in Waterford. Very heavy rain and too bright to get it on camera.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,528 ✭✭✭✭dsmythy

Very dark over Dublin City. If the storms can just hold on for the sun to set a bit more hopefully someone can get some nice Christmas lightning displays.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,280 ✭✭✭Sammy2012

Just had a few very heavy flashes not sure about thunder as was in the car. Very heavy hail/rain but looking at met radar seems to be a squall line passing over us. North wexford

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,384 ✭✭✭highdef

If there were flashes of lightning, you can be 100% sure that thunder followed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,238 ✭✭✭Oneiric 3

@Elmer Blooker that is a pretty standered thunder bringer set up at this time of year. That is more just an occluded trough than an actual front.

Impressive lightning show in progress off the Dublin Coast

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,336 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Thunder and lightning again this evening near Tralee. A lot more activity today then expected I would say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,194 ✭✭✭Elmer Blooker

I can’t ever remember seeing anything like the above in winter!

Thunderstorms are common in winter along the western seaboard in an arctic airflow but I’ve certainly never seen anything like this before!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 531 ✭✭✭Goldfinch8

Some very heavy showers at times in Central Mayo today. I heard some rumbles of thunder in the distance out to the west at different intervals earlier this morning.

Below a little bit of mammatus that I spotted in Castlebar this evening at the tail end of one of those thundery downpours.

Potential for some thunderstorm activity in the northwest tomorrow morning (Thursday) Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim and Mayo at highest risk. Some hail also possible.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,336 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Ireland didn't fare as well in the top two most thundery days in 2022.

A big thanks to Convective Weather for all their great forecasts, stats and case studies.

Things are starting to fire up off the south coast. One off the south west that could travel up along the coast of waterford and wexford. Was settling down for the night with my first bottle of beer when I checked. 2 swigs and booze is on hold.
