How to decorate this wall?

So I'm almost finished a kitchen renovation. The old kitchen was L shaped with units along the left and back walls, and I put in a galley kitchen with the units on the left and right, which left the back wall empty.

As shown in the pic the back wall is in pretty bad shape where the old units came off. What's the best way to fix this wall, or what's typically done in this scenario? Does it just need to be skimmed then painted? Would it need a layer of plasterboard first? Is there any hard wearing wallpaper or other type of decoration that could be a nice finish?

All suggestions and ideas appreciated 👍️
