Electricty supply to field in the countryside.

Just bought a shipping container which we want to use as a storage / workshop.

We are placing it in a field which is about 1km from our home so just out of reach of supplying it with an extension lead! ;)

Anyone know what the process is to get ESB connection to the field, when I check their website I mostly see information about connection for new builds or connections where planning permission is in place etc. However, as we dont require planning permission for the container, so we are unsure what the process is for requesting a connection to an empty field.

What do you want the connection for ,,the esb can do a non metered low voitage plug to run a fencer or light etc for something like E500 connection and ground rent of E150/annum.Neighbour went for reconnection of power in an old house and the fee is 4 grand

Lovely! Sounds like im heading down the 4k route so! As i'll need a direct connection as I want to be able to run security lights, power washer, saw and a welder occasionaly also.

What about just using a generator? Given the very high rural electricity standing charge, it would probably be a lot cheaper. Solar security lights would sort that.

doesn't matter if it's temporary or permanent it requires planning permission. Highly unlikely you will get an electricity connection without permission.

Planning in this instance is a matter between the client and the planning authority, the ESB do not concern themselves with planning issues (Except of course when they require planning for their own distribution network.)

The planning permission reference number is asked for on the application form for a connection.

When I check the ESB website and choose application for a single commercial unit connection (which is the one I think I need) then I see they request an ordnance survey map, and a site plan, both of which I think can be purchased online, but I don’t see any request for planning application number.

And in fairness, on the ESB website their application precondition checks page doesn't mention planning!

Also, even in your screenshot, there is no asterisk (*) next to the planning authority drop down menu or planning application number, which would suggest to me that it's not compulsory in order to submit the application...

Not being a permanent structure does not make it exempt from planning. It’s not a grey area.

A hard-wired electricity connection would also suggest it is not actually a temporary structure.

If the ESB are doing construction work for somebody. They’ll probably want to make sure those works are legal. There may be circumstances where it’s not relevant, but they’ll definitely check the boxes.

When i asked a neighbor who works for ESB how people are able to get electricity connected to fields and later add in mobile homes/cabins the answer was you just need to say its for Animal Welfare and they will connect it

The ESB have connected power to 1,000's of houses, garages, factories, farm buildings etc. over the years without planning permission being a prerequisite. In fact planning permission was not required to build a house in Ireland until the 1960's😉 and urban & rural electrification schemes started many years before. The Shannon Hydro Electric Scheme at Ardnacrusha for example was opened July 1929 !

It's got to do with whether ESB will connect a supply to a site that does not have planning permission.

I have a shed built before 1960, that nowadays would require planning permission, does that mean I can't have an ESB connection to it?

no, although it might mean that you have to talk directly to them rather than filling out an online application

thats a very different scenario though and is of no relevance to . your example is regarding something that was built before the current system was in place so is of no relevance to the question at hand.

You'll need a farm connection.

You may need planning permission for anything to do with your connection eg. ESB substation.

You'll need a completion certificate before they do the final connection.

And there's none so blind as those who do not wish to see. The ESB will connect power to a building that never had planning permission, never required one like certain agriculture buildings which were, until very recently, exempted from planning and buildings constructed pre 1960's

I'd imagine that in the very very unlikely scenario that the OP got the ESB to connect him, that they'd also insist on him having one of those external boxes in place. I don't think they'd connect up to a container.

ESB will not be doing any surveys or preparatory work on a proposed building without establishing if planning permission is required. has been granted. That's form NC5 or NC5a you linked, I think. If the structure is already there, with or without planning permission, then it's form NC2, linked in post 24, which has no mention of planning permission. That's @Ompl 's question, not whether they need planning permission for the container, which they obviously do.

NC2 used to have a space for PP number, maybe it no longer has but it did at one time most definitely
