Why not make a pile in a corner for waste trimmings, most farms have a corner that could be fenced off for it, it seems like your only looking for problems for a non issue, and let's be fair, the burning of most green waste involves plenty of diesel and more than a few tyres from what I've seen in the past lol

Ya what, tyres and diesel, not on our ground, absolutely not. Nobody with any respect at all for the land would do that. Making a single pile means tracking back and forth damaging soil structure when it's vulnerable

Just leave them to dry some over winter and then set them in spring and you make new potash fertiliser for where you've trimmed

I'd agree, but some farmers have no respect for the ground or environment so rules have to be made to encompass all types

If these were fully left rot down to nothing over 5-10 years. And the pile turned once a year to move it along.

is the carbon released back in the same as If burned day 1?

It's not punishment, its asking farmers not to set fire to something that's going to rot anyway, and the cost and time needed to police farmers not following the rules would be prohibitive, the department can't keep on top of rogues as it is

I use only newspapers to start fires here, if you leave the bushes to dry for six months it'll go up very quick.

Just edited to say that I'd have all the firewood cut out so there'd be a lot of light stuff in it

I used always do this, i did it this year to be informed that I'd need to apply to the council for a burn permit, it's still in the same place as a couple of the neighbours would ring the fire brigade if they saw the smoke so I'll let it rot away, it's all the 1 to me as it's not in the way

Getting the permit is straightforward, you contact the council, they give you a number for the fire service regional call center, to call before you burn, and when your finished burning.

One advantage of letting the bushes rot in a pile is it supports insert life, you can tell people you have a bug hotel on the farm

That's something very few would think of, a lot of insects hibernate in dead foliage over the winter not least of all the honey bee queen's, we just have to come around to thinking not everything has to be clean and tidy, a big pile of bushes would hold a lot of wildlife important to the wider ecological landscape

It's worse, think of anaerobic digestion when it's left to decay like that it then also produces methane instead of just Co2 and methne is a far more potent greenhouse gas, like 250 times worse than the equivalent Co2

But a pile of hedge cuttings don't decompose anaerobically - too many gaps to allow air in.
