Hi

I recently received a fixed notice charge for parking in a disabled car park.

I was also clamped in the disabled bay.

However we had a blue disabled badge present in the car.

My other half showed the clampers our badge and the removed the clamp and apologised.

however we have now received a fixed penalty notice from the Guards.

Can we appeal this charge ?

If so how ?

Go to your local barracks and show them your badge.

bring the FCPN letter with you.

It's probably easier to pay it and move on. Your word against a guard's and all that.

I’m guessing s/he didn’t notice the blue badge displayed.

The clampers took a picture of the badge in place so it’s there for sure so would rather not pay it as we were not a fault here.

Was the badge in date, and was the holder in the car?

I'm wondering about the use of language here. The first post said the badge was "present" in the car, this one says it was displayed. Was it displayed on the windshield at the time the clamp was put on?

From Citizen's Advice:

You must have a valid disabled persons parking card displayed on your windshield to use a disabled parking bay. The card will show the signature and photograph of the holder.

It was clipped onto the sun visor which is clearly visible from the street.

Write to the relevant Superintendent, outline what happened and ask for it to be cancelled. Calling to the Garda Station or speaking to the Garda in question will do little good as only Supt rank or higher has the authorisation to cancel a fixed charge notice.

The relevant superintendent is the one in charge of the fixed penalty office. The penalties list the address to send appeals. Doesn't speak week for op that they go online to ask strangers instead of just reading the notice they received.

Many Garda Stations are Barracks. Their addresses are even listed as barracks. "Garda Barracks Carrick-on-Shannon, Crescent Barracks Dundalk, Kickham Barracks Clonmel etc...

No, none of them are and I would love to know what list you are getting that from. Not a single one. They arent military. They aren't paramilitary. They have no sleeping facilities. They aren't barracks. Perhaps move on from the Ric?

Well in that basis why not just use any old term incorrectly. That's an issue, people allow incorrect statements and usage slide. What's the issue with just using the correct term that's been correct since before any of us were born?

In my experience only a certain type of person will use the term 'barracks' when taking about a police station.

Now I'm off to drive my train to the school because I need to get the dinner.

That is a nonsense address for the Garda Station in Dundalk. Townparks, and Upper Dundalk Barony have no reason to be included. Townparks covers half the town, and can cause confusion by being included in addresses.

It is still referred to locally as the Garda Barracks. And can be found in news reports as such. The other poster did not say they were giving the official address. If you wanted to give the official address, you should have used Eircode.

As long as people know what other people mean, there is no need to make an issue out of it. I know that people who say Telecom Eireann mean Eir, or that if they say train station they mean railway station.

Also, what does someone using the term barracks supposed to infer about the type of person they are? I was a Garda for 10ish years, I used it. What does that say about me?

And even less people call them a police station.

Back in the day, the RIC had "barracks" and the Dublin Metropolitan Police had both "barracks" and "stations" — larger facilities were barracks. The two forces were merged into a single police force over a period up to 1925, but I'm not sure when all of their facilities were officially renamed "stations". Whenever it was, the term 'barracks" remained current for many years, particularly with reference to older facilities which started out as barracks, and were always known as barracks. I grew up in Dundrum, County Dublin; as a child I knew the barracks well, but I wouldn't have recognised the term "Garda station". And I'm not that old.

North of the border the official usage remained for much longer. Well into the 1980s I'm pretty sure that many (and perhaps all?) RUC bases were "barracks", officially.

In short, the term "barracks" for a police station is still used, both north and south of the border, especially with regard to older facilities, and everybody knows what it means.

I've relatives born in 1940's/50's Dublin and all would refer to the local Garda station built I think circa 100 years ago as barracks even to this day, thanks for a little history behind it.

I’ll talk how I want. Since I was a young lad they’ve been referred to as “garda barracks” or “the barracks” and I never questioned it. I’m certainly not going to change the habit of a lifetime because you find it displeasing.

No such thing, I remain baffled why people use the term Police in R.O.I., in R.O.I. our guys are called A.G.S. which equates to An Garda Siochana, "Guardians of the peace". The Guards, Garda, Gardai.

In my own home place the old Garda Station was always referred to as the Barracks. It was in use at the time of the RIC and was continuely used up until its closure in the mid 1980s. Some of us still refer to it as the Barracks as we grew up with it (situated across from school). I think that in the RIC times there were approximately 30 members based there. Th new building has always been referred to as the Garda Station.

Which makes sense because in the Ric days they were barracks.

Barracks and station were interchangeable usages in the past. Just as train station is now the more common usage instead of railway station. Language evolves, and people are entitled to use older versions if they want.

The article was published in 2012 referring back to events of 1972, but using the language of 2012. Garda barracks is in common usage in Dundalk.

"THE NIGHT of September 21, 1972, will forever be etched into Dundalk's memory.

It was the night when the Garda barracks and many public and private buildings in the town were attacked by a mob with fire bombs and a variety of missiles."

To go back to the real topic.. I once got a ticket when i was parked outside Church when I was at Mass. My disability badge was almost hidden. I wrote, explained and apologised and no more was said. Actually that has happened twice! The second time I caught up with the parking man and apologised and it was OK. I always thought barracks was the Irish term and always try to use it rather than the English. The history sorts that. Thank you, Peregrinus.
