    A member of an post threw our mail into the waste bin on a wet morning recently thinking this was a good idea. The waste bin was full and waiting to be emptied by refuse disposal. Needless to say we lost the package.

    This is a very local issue. What arrangements do you have with your An Post delivery person as regards delivery of items that won't fit in your letterbox? Have you talked to them and arranged this? Many people have an arranged solution that suits both. The use of bins seems common enough but not used I would have thought if the bin was obviously out for collection. Did you by any chance put the bin out with the item in it??
