Sad to read this today. I’d hoped she’d have another Christmas. Very glad she stepped back a bit to look after herself and spend her time with her family, she gave so so much.

heartbreaking to see her kids left without their mum at such young ages. Much sympathy to them and her whole family.

RIP Vicky, what a warrior you were, we won’t forget you.

Amazing brave lady and a superb advocate for the Cervical Check campaigners. This state owes her a huge debt of gratitude. She will be missed. Very very sad. RIP.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Some woman. Genuinely sad to hear of her death. She showed true dignity and courage, more than was ever shown to her by the State. Rest in peace.

  • Was glad she got to enjoy a private family road trip holiday to Donegal during the summer, largely away from the media, but posting the odd snippet, and got some lovely family photos.

A very brave, honest and inspirational woman who should never of had to endure what she did. She went above and beyond to highlight the gross negligence of the health authority here in handling cervical cancer sufferers in this country and to bring about change.

    RIP

Refused to be silenced and fought like hell. Tears today of course, but the memory will endure long beyond that. A state funeral should be done imo.

Very very sad. The system let her and many other Women down. If she had of been diagnosed right in 2014 she would more than likely still be living g a full and healthy life.

I agree she deserves a state funeral.

    May she Rest In Peace.

She was a beautiful and inspirational lady. She fought a hard battle with her illness and helped so many by raising awareness with the wrongs that occurred in the medical sector. May she rest in peace.

Requesicat in pace, brave and beautiful lady. Your battle is fought; rest easy now.

That horrific car crash she was involved in as a teenager seems to have hugely shaped her life. Her boyfriend and friend were killed and another was left paralysed (and she herself suffered very serious injuries). It may well explain how she became such a strong and formidable person later in life.

I'm sorry for her family's loss and she certainly was an admirable woman.

I think this is suggestion is misplaced. Many people are under the impression that women's health was harmed by what happened. This is largely due to poor reporting by the media. I don't think we should elevate people to this status based on an emotional knee-jerk reaction to a sad situation.

    Rest in Peace Vicky.

Vicky Phelan was such a courageous and brave woman. She fought very hard to highlight what had happened to her and other women, all while being unwell herself. May she RIP.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,187 ✭✭✭screamer

I don’t think the lady herself would want a state funeral or other accolades, I think she’d far prefer that improvements in cancer screening in Ireland are made to mitigate against any future repeat of her situation. We will all remember her for her tenacity and grace.

The legacy that this woman fought for the women of Ireland is a remarkable one. It's a remarkable one for all of the right reasons.

She had campaigned to further improve the health outcomes of the women of Ireland for many generations to come. That is why her legacy is being remembered for today. And that is why she deserves our deep respect.

Thank you so much Vicky for your brave dignity while fighting an internal battle. RIP.

I was very sorry to hear the sad news this morning. Such an absolute powerhouse of a woman who was strong and determined and fought tooth and nail and stood up for herself and all of us too. Vicky may be gone from this life but she will never be forgotten. May she Rest In Peace.

She was the best of us.

As for her funeral, she said herself that she didn't want aides-de-camp at her funeral, she just wanted women to be better served by the health service in the State. I'd say her funeral may well be a private family affair. And she deserves that, the Country got too much of her when her time was already shortened.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,101 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

Very brave person who fought for justice and truth and lost her life so early. It's so sad because they're are so few leaders like her. We are more and more consumed by ignorance and greed.

May she rest in peace and may her memory continue to inspire us and give us hope.

RIP Vicky. Sincerest sympathy to her family. She fought with courage and dignity not only for her family but the women of Ireland.

Thank you Vicky. Rest in eternal peace

Sad to hear this news today, Vicky Phelan was a strong, courageous woman and that strength probably gave her longer time here on Earth than her initial prognosis. I hope she got some valuable time in this last year to spend quietly with her family and particularly her kids.

I don't think she herself would want a state funeral, the public and the state got a lot of her personal time in the last 2 years, I think her family now need a private family funeral. Her job is done. Rest in peace Vicky, you deserve to be at peace now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,950 ✭✭✭glenfieldman

    Rest in peace Vicky.

But as mush as the lady and her family requested a private funeral, I think we all know the usual media gowls will try to hijack it for their own gain.

Martin stuttering his way through an interview today saying everything is fine and dandy now, well its not because it was a disgrace it happened in the first place.

    RIP

She did the country an immense service.

Horrifically sad to see all of those women leaving us. Between Vicky, Laura Brennan, Emma Mhic Mhathuna etc they campaigned for women to just trust their own bodies to get that second opinion.

    RIP

I think it's important to remember what actually happened. The scandal was around patients not being told that their screening sample had been audited and that a second look indicated that precancerous cells were present. Sadly there is an inbuilt miss rate in screening tests as they are not diagnostic. The health service failed in its duty of candour to its patients. The buck was passed and there was an attitude of paternalism - Doctor knows best.

    RIP to a valiant campaigner.
