Sharing a one bedroom apartment.

Hi. Currently renting room in a house, also occupied by owner, her boyfriend, and another tenant who is a student.

Council offered me a one bedroom apartment

Student wants to come and live in apartment and sleep on floor/couch, whatever.

What would council's attitude be towards this?

Council will say "no" unless the student is your partner - and if so, their income will be take into account in checking if you are eligible for the place.

Does the rent a room scheme cover this in any way? Not that you actually have a "room" to rent.

Rent a room is for owners, not for social housing tenants.

Regardless, there is no room to rent.

Surely sleeping on a couch is not sustainable?

Did our minuster for general rent increases not say a few months ago that he was going to extend the rent a room scheme to council tenants?

I think there was more said about it by other ministers at the time too but they come out with all sorts of crap all the time so i gave up listening.

That’s for people on social welfare. It’s not for social housing tenants. You can’t sublet social housing.

Ok, whatever you say. Not looking for an argument. Believe me or not, i dont care. Im only saying i heard talk from the minister a while ago about social tenants being allowed to earn money from rent a room.

In council estates there is an estate manager. Until you are well established in the estate and know the neighbours and the estate manager it is better to stick to the letter of the rules. Anybody resident in addition to yourself must be declared.

Ahh, I think that's requested, not just declared.

And in a 1brm, the request will be declined, unless the request is for a partner who you will be sharing a bed with.

All the talk above about subletting and rent-a-room is irrelevant, when there is no empty room to be let.
