N13 - Bridgend to County Boundary [route selection]

Seems to be some rapid progress on an upgrade of the N13 just on the Donegal side of the border.

There's a similar project being progressed by DFI in Northern Ireland:

This seems to be moving quite rapidly in the South so I'd imagine it has some connection to the NI scheme. I can't possibly think of any other reason why.

Looks like a ridiculous corridor to me, basically through the village and having to cross the river several times. Bypass traffic would still interact with practically all local traffic in the middle of the village. I don't see any advantages in this at all.

That's the road which was meant to connect with the 4 lane road being built from Fort George area of Derry, along the Buncrana Road and out to meet Bridgend.

Of course, as usual with anything Derry or NW related in NI, that hasn't started yet and is years behind schedule.

Yes. This will be a Type 2 Dual Carriageway (cross-section is on the bottom-right of the drawing), and there are four bridges planned along the route.

Honestly hard to see the benefit for this - safety was never an issue here really and traffic moves just as well through existing road.

And the street will never be turned into something more pedestrian friendly to begin with because buildings are so far set back from road all with car parking, and lots of filling stations.

This scheme is mind boggling imo

Yes. It is confusing when you see a little bridge in Ennistymon taking 25+ years to get built. That being 1 of probably 40 other more pressing town/village schemes

It's simply to tie in with the NI plans. Otherwise the NI element would grind to a halt at the border.
