Buy new or second hand?

It’s always been said a car will drop up to 25-30% in value after just 12 months so the advice on getting best value was to buy a used car.

With the increase in cost of used cars is the traditional advice still valid.

Would I be better off buying a new car?

It's up to you. What price are you looking to spend? I know used have gone up in price but so has new cars also. What type of car are you looking at, hatchback, family car, sports car?

Have you spoken to any dealers yet about stock availability? Alot of VAG stuff have long lead times from the factory due to the semi conductor shortage. It's one of the reasons why used cars are so expensive, because new ones are not available.

No not spoken to any dealers. Just checking prices on the usual sites and fired in the question here.

if anyone spots a good deal, a mention here would be much appreciated !

It depends on how long you intend to keep the car.

Ive bought new on a couple of occasions, but held on to each car for 9 or 10 years. This negates the big depreciation in the first few years.

If you plan on changing cars after three or for years, then go for a two or three year old car.

Let someone else take the big depreciation hit.

I don't think big depreciation really applies in the current car market.

New cars sales since Covid have dwindled, so in 2 or 3 years time there will be alot less 2021/2022 cars for sale second hand simply because they were not sold new. This will result in any that do come up for sale retaining very strong second hand values as demand for them will outstrip supply. If you can actually get a new car now I think you will lose very little on it over the next few years, of course the problem is that new car prices have gone through the roof too because of part shortages, inflation and messing with VRT bands.

Or just get it on PCP so after three years just get another new car.
