Disastrous stuff.

All you lucky feckers getting the extra hour in bed... I've a 2yr old and a 1yr old, it just meant being downstairs at 430 today 😵

Didn't I hear something about Ireland needing to pick a lane and stick to it regarding either summer time or winter time? When is that happening?

Had to endure a 13 hour night shift (normally 12) and this is the 4th shift, so you are grand with your 04.30 start!

We’d be an hour out of step with our nearest neighbours which would be a catastrophe, so it’s definitely not happening.

We’ll almost certainly opt out unless the UK do it too. Having a different time zone in the north is seen as too politically sensitive.

Catastrophe sounds hyperbolic but for the cross border workers it would certainly make life more complicated.

But policy should be made to benefit the masses not the few. So I do hope the EU push ahead with the plan. We'll have a UI sooner or later and then all will be well.

That’s correct but there’s no issue (that I’m aware of) with the Spain/Portugal border being disputed. Unionists wouldn’t care a jot but nationalists very likely would.

As much as my sleeping sucks, it was even worse this morning, instead of the usual 4.30 waking up, it was 3 am today. Doggies didn't complain tho, nothing better than to fook out for a walk that early 😁

Theres loads of countries on a different time zone to their nearest neighbour. There’s also a number of countries that have internal time zones and it isn’t catastrophic. In fact, in the US, quite a few States have two time zones within them. And Arizona has some areas that observe DST and some that don’t.

With kids the trick is to start the clock change a week early putting them to bed or waking them up an extra 10 minutes early or late each day to build up to the hour change.

Some people make a complete meal out of this every time it comes up. Fact is that the time arrangement we are in now as of this morning, so called 'winter time', is our proper time. Roughly equal amounts of daylight either side of midday and midnight, the sun is roughly due south at noon or midday. That's the most logical arrangement and people have used this idea for millennia, until some bright sparks came along in the last half hour and invented electric light bulbs.

It's so called 'summer time' that is the aberration and if anything needs to be abolished, it's summer time. Next spring, if no change is require - we stick to what we have today, bright mornings in spring & summer and evenings that stretch to 10pm.

The idea that's sometime mooted that we keep 'summertime' or even worse some European time would be a major problem for us, an island on the western edge of Europe. The EU is a political entity and you can make certain rules common. But you can't make rules that discriminate on the basis of basic geography and the changing relative positions of the earth and sun. The Germans or the French or the Spanish wouldn't put up the sort of crap that is sometimes suggested for Ireland in this regard.

The only difference to me is my fussy cat was banging on the door for her breakfast an hour earlier than usual - and it's going to be a long day because I'm not letting them out today as tomorrow is Halloween and the local lads have started building the bonfires already.

They've been pacing between the back door and the kitchen window since 8:30am

You need Gro clocks to train them not to get up before the sun is up on the clock. Wonderful bits of technology and worked a treat every year for us. Kids off to bed at the same time as normal and stayed in bed the extra hour without even realising the clocks changed.

Except midday isn't the middle of the working day. Most people wake up after 6 am and like to stay up later than 6pm

The main issues for us are of course twofold: the west of Ireland is some 10 degrees west of Greenwich, in mid winter even now sunrise isn't till about 9am. If we kept so called 'summertime', sunrise in late Dec/ Jan would not till about 10am. Just think of that for a minute - 10 in the morning and the day only getting going.

Secondly would potentially be a significant rise in road accidents. Commuters & others leaving at say 7.30am on roads that are thawing, would instead but effectively put on the roads at 6.30am. Darker and with higher levels of frost to deal with.
