Best paint brand for walls and ceilings

Having the house painted soon and the deal is that I buy the paint.

Is there much difference in the brand names? One of the painters who gave me an estimate said they only use Dulux. I did paint the kitchen myself a few years ago and used Homebase own brand and it turned out fine. I will need 10 litres of ceiling paint. Should I go for Dulux or will a cheaper brand be just as good? Any recommendations?

I recently did a bit of painting in the house, used the 10L white dulux paint for the first 3 rooms, and for the final room, I decided to try Woody's own brand paint. I regretted it - the store brand paint was noticeably more watery and less durable, it was generally just less pleasant to work with. I found the walls required more coats to get a decent finish and if you ever want to clean the walls in the future, you will find the paint can be removed by lightly rubbing with a wet cloth.

I would say paying the extra couple of euros for 10L tub of dulux is worth it.

And if you wanted the best you should go for a trade-rated paint - this is typically a good bit more expensive, but it's a dream to work with. I'd say 1 coat of the trade paint gave a finish comparable to 3 coats of store brand paint!

Just my experience, would be interested to hear what a pro painter thinks.

Dulux is a reasonable good paint. I wouldn't say it's any better that Fleetwood or Crown. And they're similar price too. I would say they're better that Johnstones paint and certainly better that Woodies etc own brand paint. Dulux Total cove is fine for ceilings.

For a more premium paint Colourtrend is fairly good but more expensive and even more expensive again is Little Green Paint company. But LGP is great paint.

As far durability, Matt is less durable in all brands, especially the cheaper ones as it will make easier and it won't be take a wipe of a damp cloth without leaving a mark. Most brand do a Washable Matt which is very durable and can be cleaned. Soft/mid sheen will have more of a shine of it, (some of the cheaper ones can have more of a shine) , will also be durable and will be harder to mark and you can wipe them if needed

For walls, you can try Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion, Colortrend Matt or Dulux vinyl matt. Dulux Trade Super Matt and Crown Cover Matt are good for ceilings.

I am always a Dulux man (from the days my dad sold the stuff) and am happy to pay the premium. During covid we were painting the interior of our new build and used Dulux white emulsion through out. Used Johnstons paint for the doors and skirtings etc as Dulux was not available due to covid issues and I have to say the quality is very good.

As per earlier poster, stay away from self brands such as Woodies, complete rubbish. I sent Mrs to get paint one time and she came home with Woodies brand, it was the last time she was sent paint shopping.

If its outdoor I wouldn't use anything but Dulux, if painted properly with all the prep work done, it will really last and look well.
