if you buy a car in Northern Ireland which for example has got 12 months valid MOT on it, does that carry over to ROI after importing the car? I bought a yaris last May with mot to May 2023. Is it valid here or is it back to the old system where you have to get the car nct’d after importing?

Mot counts for nothing in Republic.

Beware if the car you buy in NI was originally sold in mainland UK then additional taxes may apply, depending on year etc.

Note you are supposed to declare an imported car asap.

Up until Brexit you were exempt from NCT for the period that the MOT was valid for and were issued with an interim exemption disc to display from the NCT organisation (doesn't look like they still issue the disc). It's still the case that you are exempt with valid roadworthy test from another EU state. I am not sure if a NIRL MOT cert would still count as they are technically still part of the EU for certain purposes and the testing system is a single company not like how it's done in UK.

Imported vehicles from another EU Member State can continue to display the roadworthiness certificate from the country of origin within the EU, which will be recognised in Ireland until the expiry date. The owner should apply and pass the NCT for the vehicle before the expiry of their current out of state roadworthiness certificate.

You can no longer transfer the unexpired portion of an EU certificate for a mutual recognition cert however, vehicle owners may use their current EU roadworthiness certificate until the expiry date and then present the vehicle for its NCT.

Above is from NCT FAQ.....does this not mean the unexpired part of mot is still valid in ROI?

I'd ring them and see, they can hardly have it both ways where they are treating NIRL as part of EU for VRT purposes and not part of it for testing purposes despite it being in the single market.

I rang NCT customer service and they said the NI mot does not carry over since Brexit. I said to them about their FAQ Q.20 but she said that is wrong and needs to be updated!
