MOT isn't valid in the Republic (no more than NCT would be in the UK), and so you'll have to get it NCT'd.

Yes you do. And if it passes it will only be valid until 8 years after the first registration of the car, so you'll have to get it NCTd next year again.

I've wondered myself what the differences are as I have had no experience of the NCT? Is it every two years? And can they be done at private garages or only at designated test centres like in Northern Ireland.

Don't start me on the shambles that is the MOT in Northern Ireland. The sooner private garages can do them like on mainland UK instead of the test centres the better!

It is done every 2 years on cars 4 years or older and done at a designated test centre.

All the info you need is here: www.nct.ie

That recently changed. It's now valid from first registration in Ireland.

Mine was registered in the UK in January 2004, in Ireland in March 2009, and has an NCT until March 2011.

The MOT in NI is considered less corrupt than in GB due to being done in test centres and not garages. For the same reason the NCT is also done in test centres.

It may be considered less corrupt but it is a frustrating and costly experience regardless of whether your car passes or not.

My own personal experience of the NCT has been the exact opposite, fortunately.

I can't comment on the MOT test.

Bought my Jun '02 reg'd car up north last year. NCT'd it in Sept '08, and is NCT'd until Jul '10, which seems a bit random but sure no matter :D

Ah! I wasn't aware of that.

Edit - are you sure? The NCT website says:
The NCT is due on the anniversary date of first registration in the country of origin

100% - I have the NCT to prove it!

I didn't query the 2011 year on the cert, the lady in the centre pointed it out and said it was the new system.
