Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone is doing the NYC marathon next month? Or if any past entrants have any tips / experience to share?

Myself and two training buddies running. Deferred from 2020 and really looking forward to it. A few more quality session to do and easy running otherwise. Have you sorted out your transport to the start and if you are dropping a bag at the finish?

    Hey there

resting up after an ankle twist so my expectations have lessened but in a way embracing the opportunity alot more

On transportation to start, working on it, on the bag drop, wont be leaving a bag

Enjoy folks - it's a brilliant event - huge really. Can be a bit overwhelming. It's a very early start with the bus rides to the start etc so if you're doing all that just make sure you can get breakfast early enough in your hotel/accomodation. We had to arrange our own instant oatmeal etc which isn't hard to organise but important if you want a successful day. Most hotels will give you the hot water at least! If getting the buses out to Staten Island, pay attention to the recommended arrival times at the pickup spots etc.

The race itself is tough - the hardest part of the course is probably the Queensboro bridge in mile 15 so the race rewards a conservative start.

Might get a few more snippets from my report from the 2018 version, which is here: https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2057219401/bq-or-bust/p104

    It's an incredible experience. Enjoy!

23 degrees forecast for lunchtime Sunday, wow.

Years ago when I took part there were fears for sub zero temps at the start area.

its funny how elites just dump their bottles anywhere were everyone else is told to dump into bins or area at water zones

Not sure Chebet will hold out

Blue line seems to be on the wide side on corners

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 954 ✭✭✭Unknownability

Looked like a very tough race, scary video of the leader collapsing. Hopefully he is okay.

Someone I know did Chicago a few weeks ago in 2'57 & 3'37 today.

He has form for it, good exposure for him though, was surprised to see him last there so long as I switched over and back earlier on.

Cant imagine running a marathon in over 20 degrees with that added humidity, seems to have broken there so the rain would be welcome.

Regards temperature, I only did one in summer which turned out when looking back on wunderground to only have been 13 in Cork in June, Dublin last week and 2014 probably the warmest I've experienced at 16 or so.

    Hi All,

Now that I am back (I stayed 10 days in total), I thought I would let you know briefly how I got on.

It was a surreal experience, the weather (23 degrees) and the humidity made it the most challenging race I have done. But I finished and am proud of that.

It was a long day. Subway, ferry, bus, waiting area, luckily from my side it was well organised and somewhat enjoyable. I have heard stories of people getting stuck for hours at the Staten Island ferry waiting for the buses, and in that heat it would not have been enjoyable.

Nerves did hit me 15 minutes before I was due to start, the long wait (nearly 3 years) to do this and hopes, dreams, expectations all came rushing in those few moments. Luckily the start on top of the bridge helped calm me down and I ran a fairly good consistent race. If it was a few degrees cooler, I definitely feel I could have done a better time but thats not a negative, I am delighted with how I was feeling during my run and embraced the noise, views, just everything during the race.

The only negatives I experienced would be typical race ones, banana skins in middle of the road, shortage of some water stations, the stickiness in parts due to the gatorade, but not a negative experience that would put me off the event.

All in all, I have my medal, a good time that I am proud of given conditions and some bling to wear 😃

Applications for 2023 open next Wednesday.

I wouldn't mind getting a spot, so if you wouldn't all mind, not applying, that would be great. Thanks 😎

Sitting in a queue for almost an hour, just to enter the lottery.

No idea why I'm persevering. The lottery is open for 2 weeks

Has anyone got this to work?

When I get to the payment page it just says transaction failed.

I will do it the weekend, hopefully the bugs will be ironed out by then.

It was actually my fault all along I was putting in the wrong CV2 number.

Yeah, I registered last night. Wonder what the success rate is like? Less than 1%?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 954 ✭✭✭Unknownability

The official website said in 2020 you had a 2.3% chance, that may have been covid affected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 954 ✭✭✭Unknownability

My friend just had the money debited from his account looks like I've missed out!

I've seen tweets from people saying that money just left their account, but the most recent is only 5 minutes ago.

I doubt the money gets taken from everyone's account at the exact same time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 954 ✭✭✭Unknownability

I reckoned I was out anyway due to Bank of Ireland canceling the $1 test amount and blocking my card. I was expecting an email saying it was rejected though and to try another card.

    Still not received an email.

Don't expect to get a spot, but my God, I'm constantly checking my emails

    Ah, didn't know that.

    Got my pfo email anyway.

Oh well, focus on Manchester, and I'll keep applying for the lottery for the big 6

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 494 ✭✭ClashCityRocker

Bumping this as i really need to start getting organised for 2023!

Is getting the bus to the start seen as the most efficient way? And if so, whereabouts would be the best part of the city to stay for accessing the bus pick points on the morning? I've only been to NYC once before so dont know it logistically at all really

  • Registered Users Posts: 189 ✭✭Toffeeboy

it goes from the Library, so midtown/times square area. I find the bus handy. Never took the boat (which you still have to get a bus afterwards)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,518 ✭✭✭Naked Lepper

heading over myself for the first time .

heard the route is tough going. got a package deal with sports tours ($$) so i think there is a bus included from mid town which is grand

looking forward to it but will need to figure out about deferring dublin if possible, dont want to lose my spot for next year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,490 ✭✭✭✭Murph_D

I suppose whether you take bus or ferry depends on where you are staying. I took the bus from midtown when I did it a few years ago. A smooth enough operation.

Good luck everyone. It's a tough course alright - flat enough on the road but the bridges are long drags, especially the Queensboro. Brilliant atmosphere though.

thanks for this, i've booked into a hotel 20 mins walk from times square so seems handy for the bus

Just secured guaranteed entry for 2024, through signing up for the virtual this year.

Can't wait! Hopefully this is the thing that gets my mojo back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,490 ✭✭✭✭Murph_D

That probably should not be allowed but congrats nevertheless. 👍

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 954 ✭✭✭Unknownability

Why should it not be allowed?

It's a legacy hangover from covid, they allocate a small number of places to people who do the virtual.

  • Registered Users Posts: 287 ✭✭CuriousCucumber

Good stuff. I missed out on that. Was online, but the virtual spots seemed to be gone immediately

Hard luck, I was very lucky.

I spent the afternoon having everything prepared so gave myself the best chance.

Else where online people mentioned that there was only 1,000 places.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,518 ✭✭✭Naked Lepper

anyone register for expo and transport today?

picking up bib on sat afternoon myself and then getting 5.30am bus from midtown

seems very early but the only other option was 5am!

anyone who has done it before have experience with getting there etc? i did not select a bag option , will bring a hoodie and dump it at the start. sounds like its gonna be a lot of standing around waiting to start

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 494 ✭✭ClashCityRocker

Yep registered also - picking up bib on friday evening so will head straight to expo from JFK, flying from Dublin on Friday morning so hopefully no delays.

On the same bus then, 5.30 from midtown

Likewise i havent selected a bag drop off although i may change that, im staying not too far from the finish but if its cold or wet day it might be good to have something to throw on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,518 ✭✭✭Naked Lepper

On the 11:10am Friday flight to jfk worh aer lingus myself but not gonna bother with expo until satursay

if you use the bag drop it will take around 2 hours to get out of the park after crossing finish line, check this out https://scblob.nyrr.org/nyrrsitecoreblob/nyrr/pdf/race-course-maps/tcsnycm19_map_finish_091819b.pdf

I’m not bothering with bag. Will dispose of clothes at start line and we get poncho at finish. I’m fortunate enough to be meeting someone there who will bring a hoodie etc for me. That might be a bit more awkward if travelling solo

Really looking fwd to it now. A lot of training yet to do and not sure what time to aim for with the amount of unknown variables , will just keep on truckin for now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 494 ✭✭ClashCityRocker

I'm in a similar boat with training and goal times, the first half of this year has been quieter than i'd like running wise so really depends on how the next few months go. I have an entry for Tullamore half next week - not sure if i'll actually be able to do it (in the middle of moving house at the moment) but if i do it should give me some sort of idea where i am.

TBH i'm viewing this as a once in a lifetime type event so time is very much secondary to enjoying the experience. I definitely want to avoid being over optimistic on the day and then hitting the wall with 10k or whatever to go.

Good luck with your training and here's to an injury free build up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,538 ✭✭✭Glencarraig

Do NOT underestimate the bridges !!!!!!!!!!!!!!, they are tough bas*ards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,019 ✭✭✭Itziger

And don't forget that nasty climb before you head into the park at about km 37. That hurt me almost more than the bridges. Talking of which, be prepared for the bridge at halfway which I hadn't seen any mention of. Well tough. Enjoy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 494 ✭✭ClashCityRocker

Just over a week to go - took my first look at the forecast for November 5 today, currently showing temperatures of around 12 degrees with no rain and minor breeze, would deffo take that

Training has gone ok and most importantly no injuries, although have a stubborn cough and cold i can't shake. Hopefully tapering off might help sort that

Looking forward to this now 😊
