She got drunk and disorderly in Spain got caught, fined, and skipped out without paying. Now she's been caught when she went back and been given a jail sentence, and is playing the victim card.

Says she didn't remember, but had 400€ in her bag just in case! People need to face their actions or understand there are repercussions...

Wait until they start scanning passports next year….. Most of Europe have civil law, not common law, so speeding tickets etc happily continue their way through the courts in your absence collecting additional admin fees and penalties until the amount becomes so big it is a criminal matter and gets logged on the Schengen system….

But there is one more little twist to come…. No more vista free travel for her, since she will be deported at the end of her stay, she’ll need a visa in future to travel to most places. She is going to become very familiar with the costa del back garden.

I am really sad to see that she is worried about the health of her baby. It looks like she took excellent care of herself prior to her arrest.

I'm all in favour of if you do the crime, do the time, but in this case, I think the punishment does not fit the crime and is overly harsh.

She got drunk while grieving, her head was probably all over the place. She had the money to pay the fine, and offered to pay it.

In those circumstances, putting anyone in prison for non-payment is ridiculous, but putting a heavily pregnant woman in prison for non-payment is especially ridiculous.

I hate to break it to you, but everyone comes up with a sob story when caught. How is this any different to other crimes? She had plenty of time to sort out her **** but decided to chance her arm, so tough luck.

The difference is the severity of the punishment.

I never said she shouldn't have to pay the fine in full, but her "crime" does not warrant a 4 month custodial sentence.

Non- payment of a fine always results in a more severe punishment than the fine itself, culminating in custody. It has to be this way, if you think about it; otherwise no-one would ever pay a fine.

I still say a 4 month custodial sentence for such a small fine is ridiculous, especially once she offered to pay. It would cost more than that to keep her in jail for a few days.

She had her chance to pay it, and she deliberately fled the jurisdiction instead of doing so. Turning up later and hoping that in the event that they call her out in it she’ll be just able to say “Lol, you got me! Here’s the cash.” was never going to work. I bet when she was given the fine she was told what the penalty for non-payment was.

Justice systems don’t work on a basis of cost efficiency: their primary goal is to moderate and influence behaviour in favour of lawfulness. The financial cost of doing that is less than the societal cost of not.

It's not about her. The Spanish would like Anglo-trash to behave themselves better when visiting Spain. With good reason, from what I can see. The fine, and jail sentence which followed choosing not to pay it, are a deterrent for other similar people. It's not all about her.

Grieving may be an excuse for drunken larrikinism in Ireland, but that doesn't hold in most part of the world.

And as for it being wrong to imprison a heavily pregnant woman: She managed to travel while heavily pregnant, I'm sure she'll cope. She's in a country with an excellent health system, and living in a controlled environment. It's likely that her health for the last part of the pregnancy will be better managed in prison that it would be if she was free-range on a holiday resort.

She travelled on 19th August and her baby is due on 28th November. Plenty of women travel at just over 5 and a half months pregnant, as she was at the time.

The prison sentence isn't for the original offense though, it's for non payment of the fine. I will agree though, that if what she said is correct, about spending weeks in a cell where the toilet is a hole and the bed was foam on the floor, that seems harsh. Prisons should be able to adapt to the physical needs of their inmates and a pregnant woman needs sanitary and comfortable conditions. Nothing fancy, just a standard bed and toilet facilities should be the minimum provided.

Meh. I've seen the inside of a Garda cell (on an open day!) and the toilet is a "hole in the ground". It's not really a hole though, but a squat toilet - used to be very common in public toilets in Europe and I'm sure there are still plenty around outside of incarceration facilities. In many parts of the world they are more common than sitting toilets. Big deal. Until recently most prisoners in Ireland were shítting into buckets.
