I am to become the main transport provider for a relative who has a primary medical certificate. Just looking for advice on how best to proceed re new car purchase. I have an electric car on order which falls into the current SEAI grant scheme. Car is about 40k. Would I be better off getting a car that doesn’t meet the SEAI grant limit (>50k?) as the PMC entitles to VRT refund anyway? Limits and SEAI grant may change in the budget too in the coming weeks so will keep on eye on that.
Would the garage be the best people to talk to about it?

Whichever type of car you go for, the PMC will be beneficial anyway. Maybe discuss with you dealer.

This is a quote I got from a dealer recently, it might give you some idea as to where you stand.
NIssan Ariya
63kWh ADVANCE METALLIC 2Tone - €56,680 . ( This car has a VRT exemption for everyone of €3507 ) .
You will get a VAT refund of €6493.
Cost after the VAT refund is €50,187 .
The SEAI grant is currently €5000 which will bring it down to €45,187 .
If you were to go through the passenger scheme you will get a further €4105.70 in VAT back , which will reduce the cost to €41,081.30 .
The total VAT trapped in the car is €10,598.70

Hi,
The first grant is if claiming as a disabled driver.
Second is claiming as a disabled passenger.
